lol @ "Near East"

I think it'll be fine that you wrote Egyptian. It's not like you were trying to misrepresent yourself or anything.

write white, this is what u of c and wustl adcoms told me, if you are egyptian or have an arab looking name, they WILL NOT count you under AA. Before someone argues, go ask an adcome if you don't believe me

I believe African-American only applies to blacks who descended from black slaves.<<

You have to be black but you don't have to be descended from slaves. E.g. Barack Obama - he's not descended from slaves, but he sure is considered an African American.

wt if ur mulatto like barack Obama? do u just choose?

I'm Black African (Uganda/Kenya) and Arab and consider myself heavily tied to my African roots (moreso than arab roots.) I have it in my blood, speak the language (not arabic), parents never been to yemen but born in uganda, african culture..blah blah

ahh, so by blood arab, by enviroment african?

I wasn't sure myself (not as much ambiguity as being Egyptian), but I am Persian, and while some consider Middle Easterners to be caucasian, i know many people who consider it to be asian. what's more, people generally think the middle east is all arabs, and well, persians aren't arabs, so I just checked other and put Persian/Middle Eastern.

no eibrahim, african by blood aswell.

coureur,

I stand corrected. Just like how Colin Powell is considered to be African-American even though his family is Jamaican (? I think).

Yes, Colin Powell is definitely African American, but he probably is descended from slaves. Africans were originally enslaved in Jamaica just as they were in the US.

But taking the longer view, if you look back far enough nearly everyone is descended from slaves - including whites of European descent, since long ago they spent two or three thousand years enslaving each other - Romans, Vikings, etc.

african american is just a 'nicer' word for black. in this case, it doesnt even mean descendant of african, black just isn't the professional word to use anymore. there are white africans and black africans, but the category african-american just stands to encompass the blacks that live in america.

I'm not sure what north africans have to put on the applications, but Persians are considered white/caucasian. I'm not just pulling that out of nowhere. That is how the US Census Bureau and many many colleges classify persians and other middle easterners (arabs, turks, etc.)

In general, "Arab" like Latino/Hispanic is an ethnicity rather than a race. I lived in Libya for 4 years as a kid (and spoke Arabic that I have since forgotten). and one thing I learned is that, in North Africa at least, there are white Arabs and black Arabs just as there are white and black Americans (and for the same reason, the black Arabs mostly being descended from captives long ago brought up from the south and enslaved). So Arab should not automatically mean "white".

Yeah Arabs are definitely not necessarily white. I'd put other and write in the specific nationality to make sure there's no ambiguity. Colleges have recently begun to give Pakistanis and Indians etc some credit for being a part of Asia as well (gee, thanks) and now allow a field for them with "Subcontinent included" next to it, maybe one day they'll do the same for Arab Africans?

"Yes, Colin Powell is definitely African American, but he probably is descended from slaves."

Colin Powell is actually descended from black slaves within the US and with ancestors like about 80% of African-Americans are.

I always assumed that 100% of african americans had slave anscestors. How else did the Africans manage to arrive at America without getting kidnapped by the Americans and being put on boats?

I meant to say that Colin Powell is actually descended from black slaves within the US and with white ancestors like about 80% of African-Americans are.

Middle Easterners are classified as white, not caucasian.

I wrote "Egyptian-Middle-easterner", I'm from Egypt.

I don't consider myself "White," I am dark-skinned. That's if white is referring to the color of skin.
