Does anyone know anything about Arcadia University in Pennsylvania, particularly its forensics program?

Well, it used to be called "Beaver College".

zoosermom: My D was accepted there with a large merit scholarship (and an offer to study in London for her 1st semester), however it was their Global Communications department that really caught her eye. Unfortunately not many on CC are familiar with the school. I happen to think it has great potential for a student with average to slightly above average stats.

The area around the school is somewhat limited (ha, I should say anything...she's now in a tiny countryside town with narry a village!)...not much to do immediately nearby...but downtown Philadelphia is "only" about 30 miles away, and there is a train station within a mile of campus...PM me if you'd like to hear more.

Downtown Philadelphia is a lot less than 30 miles away. Probably more like 10 miles as the crow flies. Less than half an hour on the train. It feels a little farther because there are no good expressway routes for driving, so you either have to drive an extra 6-7 miles or go the whole way on city streets.

Arcadia is in a middle-class-to-affluent suburb due north of the city center, about a mile past the city line. It basically serves a regional population. I don't know what the ratio of commuters to residents is, but I would guess close to 50:50. Maybe something of a suitcase school, but I don't really know. I have driven past it a couple of times a week for years, but I've never known much about it. (What I have heard has been good, though. Nothing about the forensics program.)

The fact that it's supposed to be one of only six accredited forensics programs really caught her eye. So do you guys think this might be worth a look?

I do not know of this university personally, but a friend's daughter is a freshman there. Academically, she believes it is a wonderful college with great professors (so far) and a great study abroad program. But...she tells her parents that a lot of kids go home on the weekends and the campus become a ghost town. (I'm sure there is a bit of exaggeration there!) There is also a very lopsided male / female ratio 20% males, she says. I wondered why she would choose this college if that bothered her...

Penn State has a new forensics program and it also has a dorm for kids with this interest.

It's a former women's college, I believe. (The jokes just wrote themselves.)

i graduated fromtheir in 76, and it was a fbulous school. had mentors, people who cared etc. i loved it

Bumping a very old thread with this post, but I wanted to say the “First Year Study Abroad Experience” sounds fun.

Sounds like a suitcase school, though…

I doubt that it’s a suitcase school. I think most of the attendees are from OOS. We visited in the fall and also liked it very much.

When we visited (fall 2005) she was told by the students she spoke to that the bulk of them do indeed go home on weekends and that it becomes very quiet. We reviewed the calendar of events and that showed us as well, as very little was planned on weekends. Even the dining rooms had truncated hours. Of course that was 4 years ago, so it’s possible things changed. But remember OOS can encompass all the states (there are many) that are within driving distance for a weekend if your classes end by noonish on Friday.
