Is anyone familar with Arcadia in Glenside, Pennsylvania? Since I haven't read much about Arcadia on CC, I wanted to generate conversation regarding the University to see if it could be a good optionfor me. I just visited today and I was impressed by their focus on global experiences as well as the overall vibe/aesthetics of the campus (the only college I know of in the U.S. with a castle on campus!) The political science/international studies majors seem to be popular and relatively well-regarded, which is important to me since those are two areas I am considering studying. I just have a few questions for people who have attended the university, or are aquainted with an Arcadia student. Please answer all of the questions that you can.

1). On college review sites (e.g. www.**************.com) I have heard students repeatedly comment that the academics are easy. A personal aquaintance of mine told me that I might not find Arcadia challenging enough (I have a 4.1 GPA currently, to give you an idea of how I'm doing academically). Do you think that for high-achieving students, Arcadia offers a sufficiently rigorous education? For those familar with their honors program, have you found it to be enriching/challenging, or is it mainly busywork?

2). This is rather general, but I figure I'd ask it anyway: what do you like most about the college, and what do you like least?

3). How are Arcadia's extracurriculars? I have heard that many students complain of there not being enough to do on campus (not during the open house, of course). Did you find this to be true?

4). How is Arcadia's communications progrmam? My career goal is to be a journalist. I heard that the print courses focus on things such as the inverted pyramid and writing headlines (which my journalism teacher taught us in high school). Are there opportunities for quality internships and expansion upon basic skills?

5). If you're familar with their international studies program, what are current IS students' career goals/internships? I love the idea of majoring in international studies, however, I want to make sure that there are adequate job prospects.

You can do much better, especially with a $33,000 tuition a year. A couple of my friends go there. They say it’s rather a commuter campus. and it’s like 95% female from the times I’ve been there.

have you looked at Haverford College? It only costs a few thousand more, and it’s a much better school

9sofine9–Are your friends on CC for me to contact them about their feelings regarding Arcadia? There are definitely schools of a higher caliber that I visited (e.g. UPenn, American University), but one of the reasons that I’m seriously considering Arcadia is because it gives out a number of full-rides each year, and my interests/extracurriculars seem to be very much aligned with the college’s global philosophy which raises my chances of getting merit aid. Out of my safeties, it’s probably the best match for me, however, that’s not to say it’s my top choice. Are you a Haverford student? Do you know what Haverford’s areas of strengths are (majors, extracurriculars, etc.)? I have investigated Haverford, although it is really small, even compared to the other LAC’s I’ve been researching. I just want to make sure it has adequate facilities, and the student body isn’t too insular. I am a history buff and I like the idea of their Quaker research center/honor code. Do you know anything about it’s study abroad?

nah, they’re not on CC. And like momofwildhild said, the school’s just okay. My friends are education majors there so they’re not worry about the reputation at all.

Nah, I’m not a Haverford student. I’m a high school senior. I just took summer courses at Villanova and I pass by the campus in my way home. I’ve walked through the campus and it’s very very nice. I really don’t know much about it since I don’t plan on applying there, but it seems like a very intellectual campus to me. And if you go to nces.ed.gov and go to college navigator, you’ll find a whole bunch of stats. I find that site much better than collegeboard. two important stats would be the retention and graduation rate.

you should check out mizzou (missouri state university in columbia) it has one of the best journalism programs and it gives journalist majors a lot of opprotunities. if you’re out of state they also have quite a few scholarships that waiver oos tuition

Poi–I’m definitely considering American, that’s my top choice as of now. Dickinson is on my radar as well, although I am concerned that there would not be enough opportunities in the Carlisle area for me (internships, recreation, etc). I’ve also heard the tuition is really expensive and I’m not sure about their financial aid.

Cloudman7777–I have heard great things about Mizzou, but I want to keep my college search to the Northeast so I don’t have to worry about taking a flight everytime I need to get home.
