Architectural Engineering or Civil Engineering

Hi im a high school senior and I was planning on applying to CP SLO. I was wondering whether i should apply for the Arch. E major or the CE major. Does anyone know which one is harder to get in ( some numbers would be nice; such as gpa or sat/act scores)? I visited the school recently and talked with the head of the ARCE program. He said that the ARCE program focuses mainly on structural engineering, they even took out lighting, acoustics and mechanical stuff. Will this affect me when i take the PE licence after I graduate? Also, the CE program is broader and involves not only structural engineering but some electrical and mechanical engineering too. Will taking CE instead of Arch.E make me look more well rounded when getting hired and increase my chances of getting the job? Thanks everyone :]

if you want to be an architect, do the arch. E

Cal poly was a great architecture program, i heard over a 4.0 and 1800 SAT are required, probably its hardest major

I’m going to be a ArchE major this year (I’m an accepted freshmen)
I had the same dilemma as you did, between ArchE and CE.

I ultimately decided on ArchE because of the difference between with what projects an ArchE major and a CE major works on. From what I know, CE mostly work for the government, and work in stuff such as water, power, roads, etc. While ArchE, as structural engineers work with buildings.

Though I gotta warn you: this year ArchE freshman students have the highest overall HS GPA of all majors at Cal Poly, so it may be a tad competitive, haha.

yea i know -_-… thats what im scared of. Especially because Cal Poly looks at GPA based on 9-11th grades instead of most schools who only look at 10-11 grades. My 9th grade year really screwed me over, without it i wouldnt need to worry about my gpa for CP SLO at all :/. Since you got in for ArchE this year can you please tell me your stats? like gpa and sat /act scores and like how many ap classes you took?? it would really help :] Thanks

Well I applied early admission (which is a bit easier to get in I believe) , so I’m not sure how helpful it’ll be, but sure:
SAT (Cal poly only takes CR and M): 1420
ACT: 28
3.83 CSU GPA, About the same weighted GPA.
I took 6 AP classes, 3 APs my senior year.

Thank you :] is csu gpa weighted or unweighted? because my weighted is only 3.86 including freshman year ><. and im going to try for early decision too. and if I don’t get in there I plan on being dropped back to regular time apps and hopefully get in that time haha. When you planned to apply to CP SLO did you have any other schools in mind? like backup? because Im planning on apply to UCSD UCLA UC Berkeley and UCD for Civil Engineering (structural for UCSD) also because my weighted gpa for uc system is 4.2 and maybe even UCI for EE just in case  oh. and im taking about the same ap classes too . 3 last year and 4 this year. do you know when CP counts your ap classes, if they count your senior year’s too ?

From CC, go to ‘Discussion Home’ then ‘Majors’ and search in the Architecture and Engineering Majors forums. There’s been threads comparing ArchE and CE in them.

I don’t recall it including freshman year, but I don’t know.
I applied to most of the UCs for CE, but I only got into UCI.
The Cal Poly app is pretty similar to all the CSU apps if I recall, they don’t ask for your scores, but they do ask for all your grades.

It’s been awhile since I’ve done my application, so sorry I’m not that much of a help. I’m sure if you look it up on the CSU application site they’ll have much more concrete answers than mine. ><;

If you want to be an architect, major in architecture. ArchE will NOT qualify you to become a registered architect.

ArchE is focused on buildings, but CE is not solely focused on infrastructure. Most of my classmates and I (civil engineering majors) ended up getting jobs working with buildings.
