Architecture 170A w/ Shanken?

I recognize that part of the difficulty of this course is trying to balance this class with an Env Des or Arch studio (and no sane CED student would prioritize another class over a studio course :P), and I also recognize that a vast majority of the people who take this course are Arch students.

That being said, how would you evaluate this class in terms of difficulty and workload to someone who can devote a fair amount of time to this class? I'm not taking a studio course concurrently with Arch 170A, so I know it'll be easier to balance this class into my schedule. It's not required for me to take this class (doing it for a minor), but I heard very good things about the professor and the material (even with the B class average and whatnot), so factoring in pros and cons, is this a worthwhile "elective" class to take for my minor? If not, I have a couple of back-ups that'll work.

Professor Shaken is very passionate teacher and you will learn a lot from him. However, simply because of the nature of the course, you will be expected to memorize a large amount of facts about buildings, when/where they were built, by whom, etc. As an ex-architecture major, I had difficulty memorizing everything. That said, it IS a worthwhile class to take, and since you are only taking this class, it should be no problem. Definitely rewarding, but beware that you’ll need to look at a slide and recognize what building it is and recall about 5 facts and be expected to write an essay on it.
