My son got accepted into architecture. From what I see there is a hall that houses first year arch students, however, he has a friend he wants to dorm with . I know arch is on the south campus but his friend already applied for housing on the north campus. Will this be a major problem if my son decides to dorm with him? Is he better off being with the arch students? I know his core classes will be on both campuses but the arch studios are on south. Has anyone dormed on north who was in arch? Thanks.

pha, DS accepted to architecture wonders how they get from North to South campus for their non-arch classes, and what if dorm is too far away from arch building to be able to stay and work late as so many arch students seem to…

acme, I don’t know anything about the arch. program, but they take the UB Stampede buses from North to South campus. They run continuosly and it’s about a 15 minute ride, though she should plan for at least 30 due to the wait for buses. If they’re working late and want to be walked to their dorm, there’s a number they can call for an escort (I think it’s the anti-rape task force number). Not a problem if working on South and living on North…the bus stop is right outside the Governor’s dorm and in the tunnel beneath the Ellicott dorms. South campus is not large, but I wouldn’t want my D walking alone at night there!

pha, the first year interest housing was very helpful for my D (a science major) although she also could not live with people she knew. It gives them a chance to live (and study) with new people who share courses and interests. She sees her other friends at UB regularly, but has made so many more friends in her dorm and classes this way. It greatly eased the transition. Something to think about…

pha516 and acme:

Congratulations on your acceptances to the UB architecture program!

My son is a sophomore in hs and dreams of being an architect. He’s very interested in the UB program. Would you please be so kind as to post your stats ( GPA, SAT, class rank, etc.) so we have some idea as to the selectivity and standards of the architecture department?

I want to pass the info along to my son to help validate my appeals to him to continue to work hard and keep his grades as high as possible–I’ve read the acceptance rate at the UB School of Architecture is about 17%, so am assuming they are looking for nothing less than a straight A student.

Appreciate your help.

My son is really not a straight A student but be did get into the program. SAT was 1660 , GPA is 93 and I am not sure what the rank was. We went to see the school and the program looked really nice. I don’t know if you are in NY State but it seems that they do pick a lot of in state students. Good luck to your son. My son has always dreamed of architecture too!

Freshman son was put in a dorm on South campus. All his classes are on North campus. He takes the bus and it has been fine. The bus stops right outside his dorm. The dorm on south is older, but nice size rooms and conveniences on South Campus.

For freshman, either campus is really fine and has its pros and cons. After that they can decide where they’d rather live.

Good luck to all. Buffalo has been great so far.
