Arch on south, housing on North

How is it with taking class and specifically working late at night on south while you dorm on north???that is my concern.

I had a few friends who did it freshman year… I’m sure it wasn’t the best situation, but they said it was worth it, since they didn’t want to dorm on south campus.

Are you bringing a car?

My son lived on South campus has freshman year. All his classes were on North. It was not a problem and he never complained. He loved South for the convenience of getting to the store, transportation, etc. He met great kids at Goodyear, where he lived.

I think you should call an advisor in the Arch. Dept. What will your class schedule be? All classes freshman year on South? Some on North and some on South. If they are all on South, you may want to dorm there. It’s really less a big deal than you can imagine. If there are some on each campus, you have a decision to make.

My son had requested North, but he knew he’d be puton South campus due to the fact that we sent in the deposit close to May 1 (as he was undecided on where to go until he went to Engin Open house). Anyway, he was not disappointed because he knew he’d be on South. no surprises there. Anyway, an honor student called to see if he/we had any questions (courtesy call) and I mentioned South campus placement and she said she lived there as a freshman and then picked to stay there sophomore year as she loved it. Made me feel better. My son seemed to love it there too. Very convenient and lots of freshman in his dorm, so they were all there together.

Good luck. UB has turned out to be a great school and great place for my son.

You may want to live on south. Architecture students seem to spend a ridiculous time in the studio…what they do there, I have no idea, but evidently the courses require that much work because they all seem to be there very late on a regular basis. There are buses that run 24 hours, but they are much fewer and far between in the late hours - sometimes 20 minutes between them…so living on south would probably make things a lot easier.

My son is a freshman this year in the Arch Department. He came to school originally without a car. He lives on North but is in the Studio some nights until 3 or 4am. Some nights they even sleep there. The buses back and forth from North campus were a problem. There is an express bus that goes back and forth but everytime it pulled up to him it was completely full and then he would have to wait for another. And sometimes that one would be full. The other buses that make stops take about 1/2 hour to get from North to South campus. You really have to leave yourself a lot of extra time. Then there is the issue of getting out of the studio at 4:00 am and having to wait at the bus stop. It is not a safe time to be out there. I actually had him call a cab a few times to take him back to his dorm. My suggestion would be to live on South campus or have a car. By all means I am not encouraging a car. We eventually had my sons car driven up to him. He does not drive it on the days the weather is very bad. Those days he takes the bus but it has been much easier for him to get back and forth during crazy studio hours.

My son does love the Architecture program. It is hard, alot of long hours , but they are hours of working on buildilng projects which he loves as opposed to paperwork.

Good luck.
