I recently considered majoring in architecture in college, but i found out that some schools require a portfolio. what goes in it? what type of experience do they think you should have? I’m a rising senior in high school, what are some opportunities for me to build a portfolio (I didn’t take many art classes in high school?)
There are no standard regulations for architectural school portfolios. The admissions committee will be looking for a demonstration of creativity and facility with different media, especially drawing. They will also be interested in how you present information – your design comfort level. Basically, they know what to expect from high school work and just want to identify students whom they think will be able to handle their entry level studios.
Some schools post portfolio guidelines regarding scope and size on their websites. There’s also quite a bit of information available on-line (a lot of it contradictory).
Think of anything that you do that is creative in any way. Make a list of these things. Try to include every one of them in your portfolio in some way, within reason. I was in the same situation not having taken art classes; this is what I did and it worked very well.
