Architecture

I know that Brown is not accredited by the "National Architectural Accrediting Board" with an Architecture program but I noticed on their website they have an "Architecture History" program. Is this the same as an bachelor's of architecture degree. A friend of mine also told me that Brown had architecture. If anyone knows anything about it thanks....

Brown has a program in Architecture Studies, as a part of the History of Art and Architecture department. It's not the same as a bachelor of architecture. It's actually a B.A., just like History of Art. I talked to a person who is taking classes in Architecture Studies and in engineering, and is planning to get a Master's of Architecture after Brown. Does this help?

Brown undergrads can also take up to 4 classes at RISD during their undergrad years.

Brown does not "have architecture," as one would normally use the term. If an actual degree in architecture is what you're looking for, this is unfortunately not the place to look :-(

There are a couple different issues here. For one thing, if you want to go into architecture, there are three paths:

1) a five year BArch degree which is a professional degree, can be a terminal degree....involves acceptance directly into a program, often involving portfolio review.....and with a huge chunk of your curriculum predescribed (sorta like it can be with engineering degrees)

2) BA "pre-architecture" majors which is a liberal arts degree with a major in Architecture or Architectural Studies, followed by graduate school to earn a MArch degree

3) BA in any major, followed by a MArch degree (though the Masters may take longer with no arch background)

All of these paths/degrees are followed by apprenticeships and licensure. So, first, you must explore which architecture pathway you wish to pursue.

Brown, has option number 2 (and 3), but not option 1, no five year BArch degree. Its BA architecture degree is called Architectural Studies. That is the major. This concentration is located in the Dept. of History of Art and Architecture. Not all of the courses are, however. It is an interdisciplinary sort of concentration.

My daughter is a junior at Brown majoring in Architectural Studies. While Brown doesn't have the strongest BA in Arch program (just talking BA programs now, not BArch programs), there are ways to piece together a strong pre-arch program for graduate studies later on. My D has taken many courses already at Brown for her concentration. She can take up to four RISD courses and she has taken two RISD classes in Architecture already. She also did a summer program at Harvard Graduate School of Design called Career Discovery. Right now, she is spending a semester abroad in an Pre-Architecture program which is through Syracuse Abroad in Florence. It is great so far. She will have all she needs in terms of recommended courses for graduate school, as well as a portfolio with all that she is doing in this field. She is VERY happy with Brown and with her major there and has pieced together things to enhance what Brown offers, such as through RISD, Harvard (summer) and an architecture abroad program. She knows several Brown students who have gone onto top MArch degree programs. My D is now heading up (I forget the actual title, sorry) the student "committee" for her concentration, when she gets back on campus.

Hope that helps some.

My brother just graduated from Brown double-concentrating in math and architecture, and he plans to go to architecture school, probably next year. Right now he's working at an architecture firm, and did a bunch of survey work this summer. As far as I can tell, he's pretty satisfied with his architecture experience and doesn't feel like Brown held him back at all in this respect.
