i want to get in a good place for free~

you mean that no matter what, RDs have a better shot at aid than EDers do?

oh, i have not the slightest clue about a-levels...they are like AP's, right? however, i will comment on the work exp.: i have nothing. i asked for help from the school and i got to go draft in a community college for a week...i think it's a real bonus if you have any work exp related to arch., because it has been impossible for me to find anything, or it may be just where i live...

yeah, in fact, an adult friend advised me to get a one-year job with an architectural firm. he said that was all i needed. but jobs are even harder to get in this part of the world, especially for school people like me...

i will be looking for one, but i doubt i can get one before i send in my apps!

yeah...

assuming you had toapply to either Yale or princeton, which would you choose?

judging by DI, i would go for yale, because it has better grad school....i really don't know, i checked both programs before, and neither left a strong impression

the whole process seems so daunting.

i'll just focus on upgrading my USC app and see if i can get a full-tuition. then hope to get into Cornell or Rice. But since all the others are ED, I will apply to Yale or Harvard early as a joker!

i was going to do that, but the sup. took so much time, and it was really discouraging as it keeps asking you for awards and stuff ^~^

thanks and the funny thing is, you may not actually be admitted for the arch program at yale in the end. cos you apply for the arch program in the spring semester of your freshman year and it is limited to only 50 people throughout the undergraduate population. so it's very hard. so your first year is just for trying out different courses, etc

it's funny how rankings can easily sway your otherwise clear perceptions. it's better to keep things in perspective and from what i've seen, i guess USC has some great advantages in its arch program. SC is bursting with architecture. Rice has a very small undegraduate population of less than 2,000 or 3,000. How nice. I think it's best to look at schools from our own point of view and let ourselves be the judge rather than being influenced by any ranking.

cos last year, the first schools that actually caught my attention were: U of Miami (Florida), USC, Washington U, IIT. I got into all except UM. Northeastern and the Ivies were an afterthought and i submitted the apps well after deadlines and i still expected to get in. how silly of me. I only managed to get into Northeastern. now i know how important focus is. all schools are good in their own right.

i went to an architect's office some weeks ago and interviewed her for about 45 minutes. she told me travel was a very important part of arch education. i asked her about american education. she didn't know much at all but she mentioned USC...

yeah it is, but, who cares? i'll just go the whole hog.

they see the passion in your application.

also my school never awarded students for exceptional performance. all we have is prize-giving day and i was always a prizewinner. the system here is so different, and on the valedictory service where there were to be special prizes, in our own case, non were awarded. terrible. so intl students mostly rely on sat scores for recognition...

yes, sometimes i feel bad because my friends at Taiwan work so much harder, and they don't even have a *chance at Cornell...the system is not fair, i just hope one day i can contribute to those who have less opportunities.

yeah. that's the point! that is it. create more opportunities. make things better. unfortunately many people want to study in America because they want to make money quickly and not because they want to use their education to change things and create more opportunities in their home countries. that's the big picture, really...

Jrock, they make a place for everyone who wants to major in architecture. The demand isn't higher than the number of seats, because there are so many other excellent majors at Yale. Before you take my word for it, talk to the students there (the upperclassmen, not the freshmen) who actually know and that's what they'll tell you.

hey guys, i just spent like an hour looking through these 25 pages for one post on portfolios. and since it seems right now bneg and jrock are this deep significant conversation about changing the world, i'd throw in this quote from jrock that i thought was just about the funniest thing ever - lol, but no, really i am laughing out loud right now... hahaha
heres the quote:

"Thanks for giving me a lowdown on USC. I used to think it was such a great place. But another international sophomore at IIT said the academics are terrible and the people are so ugly."

youre so right, jrock, avoiding ugly people is my number one decision factor too, :) hahaha youre awesome

jcro, you can use "Search this thread" on top right of the thread....are you applying this year? you know, i was also busy looking for portfolio stuff, and the only thing i found was jimminy's portfolio and the samples from the syracuse site, so i think you can check them out and go straight ahead to working on it, because there really isn't other info...

hey thanks bneg,
ill try that search thing, i want to see jiminy's portfolio. yep, im in the process of applying, you are too right? i sort of have a portfolio, i just need to find out if its good or if i should do more work on it. i dont want to obsess over it too much because this fall coming up is supossedly suicide at my school as far as the normal workload goes. fun fun! i also havent taken any computer animation or drafting courses so i dont have any of that. ive just got 3 pencil drawings, 2 coloured ink drawings, 4 ceramics and 4 photos - do you think thats ok? im a little worried because i just found out i even need to do a portfolio last fall and i never took a drawing course until this past spring. i also need to decide if and what i will cut back both in the portfolio and the college list because right now its getting pretty expensive with 8 schools - almost $1000 between the application fees, putting together the portfolios and shipping them out. ahhh!

how is your portfolio going bneg? (and everyone elses too!) how far are you guys? im in the process of trying to get a better idea of what is expected....

i'm almost finished my portfolio....need resizing, printing and assembling...i think you should obsess over it! you don't need to do CAD stuff, because i don't think they really care, they care more about talent instead of technique (I THINK), so i think you might as well show them your style and concerns ...who knows, it might help turn in more than 1000! but still, 8 a little much....which ones are they?

jcro2006 this is the arch portfolios thread:

to view old threads go to user control panel and edit thread display options.

i know that all your portfolios will be awesome...

thx posterX for clarifying my doubts. i may go for yale EA...

yeah the portfolios are gonna cost a whole lot of money, both in production and shipping. i'm reliving a nightmare...

is yale EA binding?
