I know that students have the week between X-mas and New Years off, but do other offices such as admissions close as well? Are public schools' closed, but privates' open? I want to be able to call and see if the school received all parts of my application yet.

naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I don
t think they
re open on the day of the holiday (December 25, January 1).

I don't expect them to be, but what about the Monday thru Friday between the two?

Most colleges are closed until at least January 2nd or 3rd, but it never hurts to call and listen to whatever recorded message is on the admissions office phone. Sometimes, you can catch a staff person "passing through" the office who just might be able to answer your questions.

You may be able to check on the admissions web site and it will say if they are open. I just checked my daughter's college and it says (and no, they aren't). It is probably common for them not to be open. They don't want to deal with panicky phone calls. They are about to go through a work marathon for four months and need a last breather.

We always sent applications by FedEx so you know when they got there. Is it too late for you to do that? If you sent a check and they cashed it or the fee has gone through on a credit card, you know they got it, too.

As far as calling just to see if other parts have been received (assuming they are open), don't. The offices will be swamped with mail. They won't know until well after the deadline what they have from whom. It takes time to open everything, set up files, and the like. Then, if it turns out that anything is missing, like test scores or a recommendation, the college will let you know. They aren't going to search through a mountain of mail just to satisfy one person's curiosity.

We arranged for everything to get there on time last year. Two colleges later told us they didn't have test scores, so we had them resent. One was missing a recommendation; that was resent as well. None of the places knew for some weeks that anything was missing.

So if your concern is with the stuff other than what you personally sent, it is not something to worry about. If they are late, it won't doom your application. Indeed, a number of colleges will send a password you can use for monitoring your application once they receive it. You go online and can see what has been received (and processed) and what hasn't.
