I know that at most very selective universities the vast majority of Asians are Indian, Korean, Chinese, and maybe Japanese. Would being a less common Asian, like Filipino, Cambodian, Thai, be of any help?

No. They report their ethnicities in chunks, and all Asians (and Pacific Islanders, on the Common App) are grouped together.

Wow… even Russians and Palestinians who are “technically” part of Asia?

No, members of those ethnic groups are considered White.

Yeah. Arabs are put under “white”, which I think was meant to take away their URM status. Pretty messed up if u ask me

^Being a minority is not necessarily the equivalent of being an underrepresented minority. Even if they were given their own denomination, students with Middle Eastern heritage would definitely not be URMs.

^^^ Now that you mention it, a lot of top schools have a big Asian population. I retract my statement

I am Algerian so am I considered white because I am arab or African due to the fact that Algeria is in Africa (for those who don’t know) ?

^Tough to say, but since you will always have to specify what country you are from (in addition to whatever denomination you identify yourself with), I don’t think it will really matter.

i have a friend from egypt and we joke that she could put down “african american”…egypt IS in africa and i consider myself asian american!
