Are all my schools reach?

Do I stand a chance of getting admitted to the schools I applied to like St johns, Fordham, Penn state, Drexel, Temple, umdcp, Hofstra, NYU(reach I know)

My top choice is NYU! I know, Just like every other American high school student, right? But do you think I could get in NYU?

Ok so about me, I am an african american male, rising senior. I am very active with in my school and community. I have been in SGA all my four years of high school. Freshmen year I was class vice pres., Sophomore year I was class pres., Jr. year I was student body vice pres. and also county student council vice pres., Senior year I am now president of the school and vice president of the state student council.

Other activities involved throughout high school: Mocktrial, some community service club, NHS, President of a club that worked with students with intellectual disabilities, state high school democrat member, PR chair for youth county council, county young democrat member, and I have over 100 hrs of community service

Now for the stuff that really matters. I have a 3.5 cumm GPA and am in the top 15% of my class. I took 4 yrs of spanish by my sophomore yr, took AP classes such as Physics, Biology, Chemistry, AP Govt, World Hist, Psych, Calc AB, and will take AP Lit and Human Geo next year. I will also be going to a community college next year to take a college level math course.

My SAT scores are whats holding me back. My M/CR are both 490...
I just registered for the ACT for September yesterday

I think your schools are definitely not all reaches. In fact, most of them are probably closer to matches. Like you have mentioned, your SAT is the biggest and perhaps only thing holding you back. However, considering you are a URM, you have great ECs and leadership, and you’re obviously very advanced in math, I think you may be able to compensate for your weak SAT score.

lol im applying to NYU , stern , their b-school.

i think you have a good chance, im African american male too, and my dad is alumni their so im not worried at all lol =p

I want to get into stern as well! That program is so good.

~980(1500?) SAT is not gonna cut it for Stern.

If you need financial aid, also check the financial aid policies for the schools that you’re applying to. For instance, NYU is not generous with financial aid, and many students turn it down because they don’t get the aid they need. I know someone who needed about 30 k in financial aid from NYU and was offered only about $3,000 k. He ended up going to U Chicago, which gave him very generous need-based financial aid.

Most colleges in this country lack the resources to meet the full financial need of all students they accept.

Second that, this is not a good list if you need aid.

I actually plan on taking out loans. Nonetheless, I don’t know where you all are getting the idea that I plan on getting scholarships in the first place(, or that I need it)

The vast majority of US students can not afford private colleges and most don’t want to compromise their futures with large loans, even if they can get them which most can not.

Broski, get that SAT up or you won’t stand a chance at NYU. How about you try the ACT?

No offense, but this isn’t a very realistic list at all. 980 is not going to cut it for Temple, Maryland, and Penn State, let alone NYU. You’re going to need to increase your SATs or the comparable ACT score significantly.

NYU is known for being stingy with aid. You should never PLAN on taking out lots of loans. Financial suicide. Everyone needs scholarships in my opinion lol. Even if you are filthy rich, NYU’s tuition is steep!

With that SAT score, even with URM status and a good GPA, I doubt you’re getting into most of your list, let alone NYU. You HAVE to get those up. Try ACT. Prep your brains out. It calls your 3.5 GPA and high rank into question. With that said, unless you get them up you need some serious safety schools, or at the very least good matches.
Best of luck!

OP: back to financials (since you’re a Stern aspirant). What if all your top choices accepted you? How much would you need to take out in loans? And how much would you have to pay monthly and for how long to repay that sum?

I pose this because of the seemingly flippant manner you said “I’m just going to take loans”. If I misread you, I apologize. I can tell you that I would forbid my children from leaving college with $100K or more in debt. They have no idea the consequences of that at this point.

I am sorry but scoring below national average will not get you into Fordham or NYU, both of which are reaches for you. Fordham’s average SAT is about 1250 and NYU’s is about 1350 (CAS). Given that you are an URM, I would say bring your SAT up to at least 1100 (M+CR) to stand a chance at any of those schools. You should be able to get into Hofstra, St. John’s, and Temple. If you can bring it up a little (~1050), you can probably get into Drexel as well. As for Penn State, you can probably get into any campus other than University Park, for which you will probably need at least an 1100.

The average SAT for Temple last year was 1110 and the average GPA was 3.4 and that should be even lower than this year’s averages. Unless the OP can throw a football or hit threes from all over, Temple is a reach with their current SAT score.
