Are boots needed at Cornell?

Are regular sneakers fine or do you need boots/hiking shoes for winter? I was thinking of getting these but I wasn't sure whether they would be necessary

Thanks!

those would be a pretty good idea.

sneakers are OK, but snow is made from water which will melt, often times leaving your sneakers wet and cold. Sneakers also aren't very wind proof so they tend to leave your toes numb.

Yeah I know. I am from the Northeast (near Boston) but I have never worn boots here because sneakers are fine in the winter. I guess the winters in upstate NY are more brutal.

i'm from the northeast too, but at home, i never did much walking in the winter. at cornell, i noticed that i slip and slide when i wear sneakers, so I got boots. Now I don't slip and slide.

Thanks. When does it usually start to snow there?

first snow is usually early october. it starts to stick in november.

it wont actually accumulate until the very last week or two of the fall semester.

what about getting some tims(Timberlands) those are durable and if ur a girl they look a lot better.

or uggs, im sure girls wear those.. do they look like they are durable enough?

A sturdy pair of waterproof 6" or higher boots would be a good idea.

6" from the sole to the top. A lot of boots come in 6" and 9" versions (ie. Timbs).

Uggs are pretty durable and warm. Mine look like total **** after a winter there, though, so if you care about ruining an expensive pair of boots you should opt for something cheaper.

ithaca is not some special hell where snow magically is worse than anywhere else.

in the northeast, most people just wear sneakers unless it's really muddy or deep snow. sneakers can be unpleasent and wet in deep snow, but you don't need the boots to survive.

I bought a pair of tims before school, and i only needed them on a few really wet, icy, or snowy days.

I would recommend a pair of boots, but they're not a must if you have multiple pairs of sneakers.

Uggs aren't too durable I am afraid.
I bought them for the last winter and the snow/ice/slush soaked in to my socks: even with the waterproof spray (which you would think isn't needed to for winter boots). They also have loads of stains on them from the salt.
They are very comfy though (when you aren't using them outdoors in the winter).
But then again, I am not too sure about winters where you are compared to Canadian winters (cold!).

Really? Mine were really dry/warm. Maybe different styles vary in durability.

did you have the ultra or sundance ones? i just have classic tall. yeah mine were pretty stained from the salt, but im definetely gonna have to waterproof them. do you know where you can get the spray because the ugg website? like a common store?

besides the ugg website*

I have the sundance ones...I'm sure you can get waterproof spray at another store, just not the "ugg" brand, which doesn't really matter.
