Are Business Frats Worth It?

Sooo...I just realized girls can join them and super searched through the forums for a while but don't really know what to do. I want the connections, and need some sort of involvement to get into Haas.

I was originally thinking about only joining IABC...maybe, and then checked DSP and ASPsi out since I want to get internships and whatnot and would need connections (I'm interested in investment banking - sales and trading or risk management)...but I just moved into the dorms (and my floor is insanely loud so haven't slept well, and don't know if I'l be able to), and am also incredibly lazy and doing URAP this semester with a difficult-ish (no labs) workload.

I would say they are pretty helpful in terms of networking but I wouldn’t say they are necessary to get internships or into Haas. If you’re not in a biz frat then just do your own networking. So as long as you aren’t passive in your internship search, you should be fine.

Great to know - I was starting to feel like I was getting behind already…like in high school…

There seem to be very few opportunities for freshmen - does cold calling work for big firms? or is it more the boutiques?..or, well, just how to go about it when I have absolutely no experience and extremely limited knowledge? (Apart from the initial my name is so-and-so, I go to ucb and intend to major in…and I’m interested in…)

I’m a member of Phi Gamma Nu, which is the newest Business fraternity on Campus (we started in Fall 2010). While I’m not majoring in Business, (I’m actually American Studies Major) I think joining a PGN has been the best decision I’ve made here. We get to do office tours, and meet people we wouldn’t otherwise be able to meet. We visited Google last semester (which has an AMAZING campus). There’s also the social aspect of being in a fraternity instead of a club, which I think is important.

As for it helping getting you into Haas, it can. Frats usually create study groups and have old exams/notes they distribute. This inherently will get you better grades. If you take classes with people you know, you’ll usually do better. I personally always do better in the classes where I know people, because I feel less inclined to procrastinate.

They say that are usually the average of your 5 closest friends. Surround yourself with smart people.

Here’s the event link to PGN Rush:

Your best bet may be to just attend different rush events, and then see for yourself. A lot of it is a personality thing too.

If you look at the different website for the frats, you can see where their members are going full-time/internship. Oftentimes, the analysts that get hired full-time come back to do recruiting. That means anyone in the frat they were in almost automatically gets an interview. This is why DSP always gets Goldman, AKpsi gets Morgan etc.

How I see the business frats (Looking at Full Time):
[Brothers | Careers & Internships](http://www.dsp-rho.com/brothers_careersinternships.php) [4 Goldmans] - IBD focus

New one:
[Three Pillars | Phi Gamma Nu | Delta Tau Chapter](Three Pillars – Phi Gamma Nu)

does phi gamma nu accept econ majors and does anyone know how much it costs?

Hi,

Yes, Phi Gamma Nu Accepts all majors. I’m American Studies major. That being said, fees change every year. Expect something between 100-200 for the initial fee. Plus there are expenses when we go on trips and stuff (which are optional). Be sure to check us out on facebook. Even if you’re unsure if a business fraternity is right for you, come to the Meet the chapter event tomorrow at 7 at 101 Wheeler. You’ll meet the brothers, and see if its the right fit. There’s no cost, and at the very least you’ll leave with a free meal.

what are the gpa requirements for professional frats? Any frats with lower gpa req? below 3.0??? lol

Most won’t accept a GPA below 3.0 unless you know someone in the fraternity, or you have an extenuating circumstance. I’d give it a try anyway. They’re like employers, sometimes you can blow them out of the water with other things.

If you guys are interested in Phi Gamma Nu, come to our first rush event tonight! Its in 101 Wheeler at 7pm, and the dress in Business Casual. Free Sushi!!!

okay, I found social one that will allow for my gpa! so yaay.

I always go against joining social ones, I mean …it’s appealing at first and then i always decide against it. but now my life is getting boring and my party friend doesn’t hang out with me anymore because she’s dating so i think i might join. should i? my life is kind of boring now and i try to hang out with friends but a lot of my friends don’t party and stuff. I’m not big on it either but I like going out and meeting people andh aving fun…
