Are college acceptance GPA stats weighted or unweighted?

Excuse my ignorance, but when I look up average acceptance GPAs on College Board, US News, etc., are they using weighted or unweighted GPAs, or does it vary by the compiler?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It varies...

unweighted virtually 100% of the time

they couldnt use weighted cuz different schools use different methods... i.e. on a 6.0 scale, aps get 2 points extra, etc... its all unweighted

crouton, that is not true. While your reasoning may be accurate, many schools still report weighted GPA's, or weight them themselves.

I do have a feeling a larger percentage of the GPA's reported are unweighted though, you just have to use your reasoning. If columbia reports a GPA of 3.8, its obviously uw, but if Joes College reports the same, its probably weighted.

For example, last year UVa reported a GPA of 4.02 (iirc).

Most likely they would use unweighted, but also consider the weighted.

I'm thinking it depends on the reporting methods, which varies from college to college. If you look at the breakdown in common data sets, you might see that they're roughly the same as those reported to CB and show that the average GPA is above a 4.0, so obviously weighted.
