Are Colleges Acceptances Racist?

How do yall feel about affirmative actions. Does the SAT benifit mostly the upper class majority? Aren't they mostly the ones that can afford to shell out 800 dollars for an 8 week SAT prep session?

god **** about it already, this has been gone over 180 hundred trillion times on CC

I loathe affirmative action. I go to a rich suburb school where 90% of the students are upper middle class. Yet, literally outside our city limits is the poor section of town.

We have very few minority students, and those who are minority have never faced the discrimination that affirmative action is trying to level. Yet, there are poor white student who uses what little money they can for their school application - only to get rejected because they are white, whereas the kid in my district has spent $800+ on applications and gets into the school because he is "discriminated."

I don't think that's fair, whatsoever. Eh, I refused to put down my ethnicity or anything like that on my applications.

of course they are racist, everyone is racist in one way or anoter, if you say you are not racist, that is bs

I'm not racist.

dude, im black ad i took it once and 2110

how is it racist

"How do yall feel about affirmative actions. Does the SAT benifit mostly the upper class majority? Aren't they mostly the ones that can afford to shell out 800 dollars for an 8 week SAT prep session?"

The upper class is most definitly not a majority, more like a minority. And yes the test is coachable and not a measure of intelligence, and thats why it is not held as the only factor in admissions.

SAT correlates with intelligence. CC has evolved to hate the SAT and think of it as a test that only measures how well you take the SAT, but please, colleges are not stupid. They would not be using the SAT if it really were as flawed as the consensus on CC is.

well the thing is that the SAT is a test of intelligence. It is not a test of the knowledge it claims to be testing you on. Kids arent paying $800 to have their tutors take the tests for them. Yes, they are being given all the secrets, but they need to apply those secrets properly, which is a skill that no amount of money will give you. I remember as test time was getting nearer, I was thinking about how there were so many little tricks, I never thought I would be able to know all of them. So the SAT is flawed in that it is a poor test of reading comprehension skills, writing skills, and math skills, but it is not a useless test.

Obviously admissions is racist, or else they wouldnt ask for your ethnicity, and there wouldnt be any stats on racial backgrounds of the student body, and the word "diversity" and all its forms would not appear 2982497234592573 times during info sessions.

And you can get the same lessons from an $800 course as you can from a $35 book.

Not this again!!!!!!!! This has been discussed a million times with absolutely nothing accomplished. If you want to read about it- search for AA on the search function. Plenty of threads will come up.

When i said Majority, that was another word for being caucasian. How many of you all did not go to a prep course and got over 2100?

raises hand

well, i got exactly 2100 w/o prep courses

If It Wasn't Racist, They Wouldn't Ask For Your Race On The Application. It Should Be A Color-blind Process.

oneiros lykos8 - Get off your ass.
If things were freaking EQUAL to begin with, there would be no need for AA. It's pathetic that the government has to force a law just to make sure equality is ensured.
And there's nothing wrong with AA, it helps minorities and does nothing for non-minorities, as in you're in the same standing you would have been had AA not been enforced. It's called being given a handicap.

Also, white girls are helped by AA, but not many people know this. Legally white women are considered a minority. The only people NOT minrorities are white men.

Do your research before flapping your mouth.

Edit: and to the OP, unless every single person running a college hates, feels superior, or holds disdain for another race, than they are not racist.

Jaylessy, I think the OP meant that "are colleges racially biased" not racist.

Also, AA in college admissions DOES hurt the majority. If seats are given to underqualified minorities, then seats are taken away from qualified majorities.

Colleges do not hurt the majority, even if an underqualified minority is given a seat, s/he still has to keep up, do the same work as everyone else, and pass the same classes as everyone else. In order for the minority to stay in they need to do the same as the majority, and if not, their seat is given away to someone else.

Also, I highly doubt a college would choose a minority with a 3.7 over a majority with a 4.2, the person they would pick the minority over is the person with a 3.7 or less.

First of all, things get much easier once you actually get into college. Getting into the top colleges is so cutthroat, but there's no such competition once you get there. No one's seat is "given away to someone else." Grades don't even matter in college (usually) since you get a degree regardless.

And uhhh what are you talking about, "the person they would pick the minority over is the person with a 3.7 or less." That's how it would be if minorities had to do everything on their own, but AA makes it so that a 3.7 can get taken in over a 4.2. It happens.

When you're on admissions' commitee for ANY school, then feel free to respond as if you're certain. Until then.

I served on the admissions policy making committee for my state school last year. www.asu.edu
