I think it is unfair, I am all for providing opportunities for minorities, but isn't rejecting an asian/white with the better stats than an african american/hispanic(who was accepted )a bit racist?

I understand cultural and campus diversity, but a less qualified applicant getting accepted over a more qualified canidate because of their race?

Also, I am not completely sure of this, but I would imagine that many minorities who are accepted to top tier universities and were accepted not because of their race, but due to their accomplishments might be looked down upon because other students might think that "they only got accepted because of they're ethnicity and should not be attending." My Hispanic English teacher told us she experienced this a bit at UCLA.

What do you guys think? I am not to well informed on the subject, but my brother began to talk about it because he began to apply to colleges.

if you look on the other forums on CC there are already way too many threads on AA.
i will say that it’s sad when the african american son of a dentist gets the benefit of AA over a caucasian/asian in poverty.

I completely agree. They’re all about giving equal opportunity, but they are segregating students by considering race a factor. I don’t think they should pay attention to that at all.

The point of Affirmative Action is to make the admissions process as fair and balanced as possible. In the past, it was much more difficult for minorities to excel, and thus, an 1800 from an African-American was superior to that of a 2000 from a Caucasian.

But it’s overstayed its welcome. I believe that socioeconomic affirmative action needs to be taken to an extent. E.G. A rich kid will have a lot more EC opportunities and SAT prep than a poor kid.

But racially based Affirmative Action is stupid.

Example:

UCB, which does not use Affirmative Action (Or at least not as heavily as private schools) because of Prop 209, is over 40% Asian and just 4% African-American. African-Americans also outnumber Asian in California…

But for the sake of convenience, we’ll say that Asians produce ten times as many highly qualified students. This ratio drops significantly at Affirmative Action practicing schools. 2.2 to 1 at Harvard, etc.

It has WAY too much impact, and I don’t see why African-Americans can constantly complain about racial difficulties yet Asians can’t.

On another note, why are sites like TheGrio.com allowed to exist without cries of racism? TheGrio advertises it as African-American news. Imagine the roar if there was a site advertising its news as news with “A white viewpoint”.

For crying out loud, can they just shut up about discrimination already?

And this is coming from a far-left liberal…

Anyway, at a lot of the colleges I’ve looked at, they don’t technically have affirmative action. The scholarships require “a high level of fluency in spoken and written spanish” or “a demonstrated high concern for African American issues”.

Forebears of nowadays African Americans were treated in the most cruel ways imaginable; therefore, now we have to make it up to African Americans, by adopting AA and many other policies. I can only explain it in this light.

Forebears of modern Baptists were persecuted, killed, and driven into the wilds by the forebears of modern Presbyterians and Evangelicals. Therefore Presbyterians and Evangelicals should provide Baptists with support for their church buildings.

Just throwing this out there, I’m not really sure what my opinion is on this issue.

^ Yeah, I know. But, Must I give an explanation for AA, I can only offer this unconvincing one. But I guess forebears of modern Baptists suffered not ten percent as much as those African Americans.

haha, don’t forget to mention forebears of modern Jews, modern Chinese, modern Feminists. :D

^ Modern Native Americans, modern Irish, modern Catholics, modern Protestants, modern Saxons, modern Moors, modern Confederates, modern Amazonian tribes, modern coal miners, modern dust bowl farmers…

The argument is especially ridiculous for Feminists, IMHO… It equates to me saying: “in some place at some time tall people were discriminated against. I am tall, therefore I should be compensated for these past wrongs”.
