I am just wondering, are cornell admissions specific to the department you apply to, or is there a central admissions committee that reads all applications?

They are specific to the college within the university you apply (ie. Arts and Sciences, Engineering, etc.)

They admit you to a college. You are free to change majors, but have to apply to a new college once you’re there if you have a change of heart. Hope you indicated which college you want with a check in the box. They automatically reject about 1000 kids a year if they don’t check the box for the college they’re looking at, even if the essay refers to that college!

Thanks.
So that means that my admission chances for engineering only depend on the other engineering applicants? I mean will I be competing with applicants to Arts & Sciences, etc. as well?

Nope, you’ll only be competing with others in the Engineering applicant pool.
