Are Decals really legit units that I should worry about?

I think I'm taking

Math 1a/1b (haven't decided yet)-4 Units
Chem 1a-4 Units
Philosophy 12a-4 Units
History 5-4 Units
History 24 (sec.II)-1 Unit

which totals up to to 17 units

IF I end up taking math 1a I think i'm going to take a decal.
Will the Decal take any of my time or thought outside of the class?

It really depends on the decal.

The academic ones are usually taught by students who are serious about going to graduate school. Expect lots of work.

The sport ones are jokes and you have nothing to fear unless you are fat.

The funny/weird ones like fe/male sexuality or simpsons and philosophy will be a little challenging but entirely doable.

The literature ones will ask you to read the book and talk about it.

I recommend the Harry Potter decal.

How hard is it to start a Decal? I was thinking that maybe my junior or senior year I would start one, but I don't know the process. Do you as the creator get units for the class?

Thanks

There's lots of info on how to start a decal here: http://www.decal.org/start/index.php

Wait, I thought Decals don't count as units?

They do count as units. You can't hold a class and not offer any credit for it. It's just that most of the Decals are graded on P/NP and are usually only 1-2 units.

Oh I see. But they don't count as university requirements right?

they count as general electives, i think

Correct - you cannot use decals to fulfill breadth requirements (if you're in L&S), but they do count as credit towards graduation. However, a maximum of 16 units from Decals count towards graduation, and a maximum of four units of decals can be taken per semester. Also keep in mind that only 1/3 of your university credit can be taken P/NP, and ALL decals are graded P/NP.

I was totally thinking of the Harry Potter decal!
Greatestyen--Can you tell me more about it?

where is a list of decals at berkeley?

www.decal.org

just out of curiosity, are decals only offered at UC berkeley?

DeCal stands for Democratic Education at Cal, so it is only at Berkeley. However, there are similar programs at other schools. I think there's a list on their web site.

The list of classes for Fall 2006 isn't up yet on the site, but you can check out ones offered last semester.
