Will a regular backpack get the job done and not harm the laptop or are the padded backpacks needed?

i would just get the padded ones, they’re not much more expensive

yea snag a laptop pack…keeps everything nice and toight

It. Doesn’t. Matter. A backpack is a backpack. Get a hard case or a sleeve for your laptop and you are good to go with whatever.

I have a regular backpack for my books and all and a briefcase-type bag for my laptop.

I definitely like the laptop bag better. I find that they are not only more padded for the computer, but in your back as well which is much more comfortable and I feel better about putting the laptop in it.

The laptop ones are nice, though it’s kind of annoying when I don’t have my laptop (which has been a lot recently) as I figure I would have had more space without that padding. But either way you go, definitely get a hard case or sleeve for your laptop.

I use my laptop backpack because I don’t really have a choice… The backpack I used in high school was HUGE and pretty ugly (looked like I was about to jump out of a plane - Oakley). The 'rents wouldn’t splurge on a new backpack, so I just brought this one. It does the job.
