Are Marketing majors really that bad?

In the past year I recently became interested in studying marketing in college. I really enjoyed the psychology/sociology aspects of it. However, when I did more research on this major I found out that what I enjoyed about it also made it the most looked down upon out of all business majors.
I'm not interested in this major because I think it will be easy or don't want to put effort into school. I have a 4.27 gpa and am in the top 10% of my class. Is majoring in marketing a really bad idea? If so are there ways to beef it up such as double majoring in something else?
Also if you are taking marketing, how has your experience with it and are there many opportunites for employment after college that are stable?

Thanks in advance for trying to help me!
After reading so many negative comments about marketing, I'm starting to feel super super worried :(

Marketing may be low on the list when it comes to reputable majors, but it is not at the bottom. Pure “Business Administration,” General Business, International Business, Management, and other similar business degrees/majors are less reputable than marketing. However, school prestige can help a great deal in some cases, but I suspect you do not go to a top school since you didn’t mention it (no offense intended). Obviously, that is a fantastic GPA though.

Networking (who you know) is king over everything. Work experience / internships is second. Although it is better than nothing, I honestly do not think most employers care about extracurricular activity at all since the recession hit. So your best bet is to focus on those top two things more than anything.

But within school itself, coursework in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science (specifically dealing with programming and/or data), Accounting, and Business Intelligence / Data Analytics might help. Also consider English courses if you are not already solid there. Focus on networking and work experience above all else though.

Lesson from the working world. Marketing personnel are the first fired when budgets are squeezed or corporations are merged. Especially true at high tech companies. Major in accounting!

To be taken seriously in a marketing career, an MBA is a must. Having a marketing major as an undergrad is not as “marketable.”

cookie: I actually thought it was internal IT that took the hit first lol. If marketing is truly the first to go in tech firms normally, I wonder if that is normally the case in non-tech firms?

Thank you all for responding! I plan to attend a fairly well known school (William & Mary) and I also plan to go straight into my masters after I receive my undergraduate. Will this be enough to have a good shot at being successful in this field?

It sounds like that will be great! A lot of very respectable people have marketing degrees.

What would be a good degree for a career in Market Research? Would Marketing be a helpful for a career in Market Research?

Market research and sales are the two main disciplines under “marketing,” so yes

I’m a copywriter and have worked with marketing managers all my life. I don’t see them getting laid off more than anyone else, and with experience, they generally make 70-80,000. If they become Marketing Directors or VPs, they make considerably more. You might want to get your MBA at some point, but it doesn’t have to be right away. Get a few years of experience and find a company with educational benefits to pay for some of it. I agree that statistics classes would be very helpful to a marketing manager.

It ultimately depends who you work for.

Could someone elaborate on this for me a little? I’m relatively new to these forums, so I don’t know much about some of this stuff. Which business degrees are and which aren’t reputable?

I third a Statistics minor to beef up your Marketing major. A double major may not be necessary if you plan to immediately continue into a masters. Choosing marketing as a passion rather than an easy option will go a long way.

Beijing- the soft majors are those which don’t have a technical/mathematics base. Of those listed by GoalsOriented, I would add entrepreneurship and human resources.

I am an MBA Graduate and recently joined a firm which is basically deals with market research. Marketing knowledge is definitely helpful in Market research. So, I think MBA or BBA will be a good way for it.
