Are most Hispanics at UVA from Out of State (or in state)

Just trying to assess my chances. I'm Hispanic and from NY. I was wondering if UVA gets enough talented Hispanics from VA, or do they mostly draw from out of state.

Most hispanics at UVA that I know are either in-state or international. Anyways, we don't have enough hispanics at UVA. We NEED more so apply anyway. If you want to know your chances, then give us some stats. UVA is not going to limit admission from out-of-staters based on race.

Hispanic male from NY

SAT I: M 720; V 700; W 730
SATII: Bio 690; Chem 750; Spanish 780

Took 3 AP's junior year..just got the scores:
AP Government: 5
AP Spanish Language: 5 (never took the course)
AP Spanish Lit: 5 (I took the course)

Please don't tell me I should be great at Spanish because I'm Hispanic. We all speak English and not everyone gets 5's on the AP English exams!

Unweighted GPA: 3.65 School doesn't rank. Very competitive private school.

Will be receving National Hispanic Recognition Award in Sept. (equivalent to National Merit)

Extracurriculars:
Studied Spanish abroad the last two summers (we dont' speak Spanish at home since I'm 1/2 Hispanic and my dad doesn't know Spanish). I am currently bi-lingual. Max'd out of my school's Spanish curriculum and will do an independent study as a senior (in Spanish).

Volunteer ESL tutor. Tutor Latino's in English so they can learn English.
JV tennis (singles). I won the coach's award
Junior Statesman
Model UN (won 2 local awards)
Senior staff writer for school newspaper
Science League team member
National Spanish Exam award winner (2nd place in my state)
JV Basketball (only 2 years)
School Amabassador
After school job during fall and winter (work 10 hours per week on school days). I do tennis in the spring
Leader in the classroom according to all my teachers, but haven't been elected head of anything.

Expect great recs. I expect to write a great essay, too.

Do I have a chance if I apply Regular Decision?
Thanks

You have an excellent record. The only thing that seems irksome is the GPA. Since you have no class rank, the GPA will become a bigger factor as well as your courseload. Perhaps you can take a few more APs if possible. Work on those essays since those could sometimes help your case.

Just curious, what are you going to be majoring in?

If I get in i want to major in business (I know I have to apply during sophomore year). Actually, that is the real negative about UVA..the fact that you have to apply to their business program. U. Michigan is ranked higher for business and you can now be accepted straight from high school. NYU is also ranked higher and you can get in straight from high school.

As far as the GPA (unweighted). Most of my math and science classes are in the B+ range (honors classes). Most of the English, Spanish and history classes are in the A range (also honors). AP Govt. was B+ to A- but the teacher gives really hard tests and is a tough grader (I proved this by scoring a 5 on the AP Govt. exam). There is grade deflation at my school and the colleges might already know this. That explains the 3.6 GPA.

I will be taking three more AP's senior year (AP Calc AB; AP Chem and AP Comp. Gov).

From your credentials, I don't see you having too many problems getting accepted to UVA. You may have a chance of getting into UVA by applying early decision, considering the grade deflation at your school. Make sure that you visit the campus in Charlottesville too if you haven't already.

If you want to go to school in Virginia, you may also want to consider the College of William and Mary, which also has stringent admissions standards, and the US News rankings consistently say that W&M's selectivity is tougher than UVa's. I know from my user name that I'm biased since I'm from there, but you may like the smaller student body atmosphere that W&M has to offer. Their undergraduate b-school is also very highly regarded (the grad program isn't good though). Undergrad-wise, W&M should give you just as good of an education as UVA will. The only factors that should separate the two are the atmospheres they have to offer. This is "Mr. Jefferson's" college too if you don't know that already. The University of Richmond and Washington and Lee University are also very highly regarded liberal arts colleges, but I don't think they'd be a good fit for you considering that you want to be a business major.

There are few Hispanics at any Virginia school to tell you the truth, but I'd say that a disproportionate amount (over 75%) are from VA.

As with majoring in business administration, at most schools, you have to apply to get in during your freshman or sophomore year. I think it's better that way. This way, you can take classes in other areas, and see if the BBA is something you still really want, and in the event that it isn't for you, you still can pick from a variety of majors.

Good luck in your college search.

You should look into applying to both schools if you're looking to go to a school in Virginia. I think W&M would be easier for you since you're hispanic, whom they give much preference to (UVA does too but not as much)

Edit: However if you want to do business you may want to look into going to UVA for its undergrad commerce school instead, since it's relatively well ranked.
