I am a junior with a 3.834 unweighted GPA from the end of last year. My grades this year are about the same so far, but I take about the most rigorous course load possible. My school has block scheduling and limited AP offerings, so it is impossible to work in as many AP courses as at conventional schools. I am really interested in applying to the college, and my dad got his MBA at Wharton, so I am a legacy. My biggest concern is my grades. So if you want a list:

3.834 GPA unweighted
3 AP classes- US history, stats, US government & politics
Won award for excellence in AP US history
All others are honors, through this year:
3.5 credits English
4 Science, 2 lab
6.5 Math
4.5 History/Social Studies
3 Foreign Language
1 Fine Arts
1.5 Gym/health

Test Scores:
235 PSAT, taking SAT in March
SAT II:
790 US history
790 Math Level 2
780 Math Level 1

EC's:
Tutor/aide at Hebrew school (4 hours/week)
USY member, chapter board member
Coached 5th/6th grade intramural basketball
member UNICEF club, National Honor Society
Secretary/Clerk of 501(c)(3) nonprofit, for which I run an annual fundraiser
Played Freshman basketball

The best indicator is to see who went prior years from your high school. Look at their stats. You can’t ask the general public. They don’t know where you come from and how Penn looks at your high school.

Not sure what you’d be considered a legacy for a parent attending grad school, but if you are, I think you have to apply ED to get any boost for it.

Do you know what your class rank is?

Assuming you have a decent class rank and you score as well on your SAT as you did your PSAT, you should have a chance, but it’s obviously it’s very competitive

The only person from my school who has gotten into Penn was last year’s valedictorian who had 4.17 GPA unweighted and wound up going to Harvard. There haven’t been any applicants like me. I do not know my class rank, but I’m pretty sure I’m in the top 5%.

Penn has special advising for legacy admissions google the words “penn legacy admissions” and you will get to the right place. I suggest that you contact them and schedule an advising session.

I was at the office when I visited in October, and they had a little seminar for potential applicants and parents. I was planning on going back in April, and probably having some meetings. My dad knows a lot of people through Wharton club, so I should definitely be able to talk to someone. I just wanted a little confirmation that I wouldn’t be wasting my time and theirs. My grades make me nervous and my EC’s won’t get me in anywhere.

Thanks for the advice. I figured being on the board of a 501(c)(3) was my biggest asset, it does take a lot of my time and is all volunteer, and I consider the work at Hebrew school, USY chapter board, and coaching all leadership. My summers are kind of black holes on my resume, so I will definitely look into something strong for the summer. Presently I am trying to get clients for SAT tutoring, as strong test scores and teaching are themes in profile.
