Are My Grades Good Enough?

I’m an upcoming freshman and I’m thinking about taking certain honors classes, but I just want to make sure that my grades are good enough. My GPA unweighted is a 3.9, and I’m in all honors right now.
English grades have been straight A’s for years. Same with science and history.
I don’t want to take honors math, because my grades aren’t really in the A range. Hopefully that won’t be bad, as I want to go into an Ivy. Feedback on that would be great as well.

You have no high school GPA. Lol. Nor high school rigor. They don’t use middle school.
Miles to go.

I know colleges don’t look at middle school grades. I was asking if my grades for high school make sense for the classes I want to take. I don’t know what you mean that I have “no high school rigor”. I literally can’t take harder classes at my middle school. I know I don’t have high school gpa. But my high school does look at middle school grades. I don’t think you understood what I asked.

Your question is whether it makes sense for you to continue in honors classes for everything but math, based on your middle school grades? Your school’s counseling office or your current teachers are better positioned to tell you that.

Eighth grade is too early to want to go to “an Ivy.” There will be plenty of good schools that will be happy to have the student you end up being.

Yes, and I understand. I know I shouldn’t be worrying about it just yet, it’s just something I obsess over for whatever reason. Thank you for your input.

Your question is irrelevant in the first place. You’re in 8th grade, and you’re asking about your chances for an Ivy. It’s not even possible to give you advice to help you get there until about the end of freshman year.

No, I’m asking if my grades are good enough to be in honors classes for certain subjects I’m interested in. I meant that I’m hoping that not taking all honors classes will not affect me for an Ivy.

@WrenConfidential You’re an upcoming freshman and you want to know your chances for an Ivy? Too early. Ask this question in two years.

From what you’ve mentioned, you seem to be a hardworking middle schooler. Keep up the good work and post some stats in the upcoming years. Then I can properly answer your question.

Everyone else has good answers, and I completely agree with them, but to answer you, @WrenConfidential, you should be fine moving up to all Honors courses based on your grades. However, if you really don’t like math, it might be a good idea to take regular. What math level are you in? This may help us recommend you for a certain math grade, and what is/was your grade in the class? If it’s a B or higher, it should be fine to stick with honors.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. Best of luck and have a good day!

Algebra l honors, which is a high school level course, but I didn’t exactly get a choice as to if I wanted to take it. My math grades, I feel, are just not good enough to take the class, but if I take the class I’m going to definitely get a tutor. Thank you for your time!

You’re grades are definitely good enough to go into all those honors in high school. But you do not necessarily need to take a ton of honors classes your freshman year.
Even if you want to go to an Ivy League college, and despite honors classes looking good, AP are mainly what they are looking for. And, most colleges don’t really focus on freshman year classes or grades; obviously it is important to maintain high grades but it is not something to totally stress over freshman year. You will totally be ok not taking the honors math class, you can always go into one sophomore or a later year once you feel you have gotten to the point you want to be, and you would even be fine not taking one other if you do not really enjoy that subject.
Colleges mainly look at sophomore, junior, and senior years for classes and grades since freshman year is a transition, but also to see improvement in grades/course type. They also of course like to see a well rounded student who takes advanced classes in multiple subjects, but also ones who narrow their focus to maybe math or science, the arts, or maybe literature and social studies.

I would take honors math if you are recommended for it.

Even if I felt that I would fail?

I guess my question concerning math is this: Do you feel like you will fail because of your current grade, or your perceived understanding of the material? If you’re concerned purely because of your grade but feel relatively confident about the material, continue in honors. If you’re concerned because you don’t feel like you are really getting the material, then I would talk to your teacher and see if they think you can succeed in future advanced math classes. They’ll have a better idea of how you would do in your high school’s class.

As for the question of whether it will hurt you to not take honors math, here’s my two cents: If you are interested in a STEM area, then it can be really helpful to take the most advanced math track you can go into (ex. taking honors next year, I don’t mean trying to skip years) because math will come up in most science classes too and can be helpful to feel more confident in your stem classes. If you are more into humanities, then I think it’s a lot less important. Though it’s good to take rigorous classes across all subjects, take what you’re interested in and feel you can handle. If math isn’t your area of interest/strength, then don’t worry about it next year.

My final advice is this: don’t close any doors. If honors next year is your only opportunity to get on that track in high school, then I would take it as long as you feel relatively prepared so you don’t regret it later.

Hope this helped.
