I will be a junior this fall. All my friends have summer jobs, camps, research opportunities, etc, and I am worried that my lack of activities will negatively affect my college applications. Currently I am taking online summer school (honors american history) as well as summer dance classes twice a week. I also work as a figure skating coach, but it’s only 3 hours per week and I wouldn’t consider it a summer job because it’s a job I do year-round. Are my summer activities weak?
Not really. You are doing three things. Colleges don’t want to see kids do nothing. They want to know how you fill your downtime. Coaching is a leadership position. Working is also and then your taking an academic class plus continuing dance. That’s a lot of stuff. Dance also shows dedication and usually hard work. Same with skating. Both show dedication, passion and hopefully improvement of your skill. All very good qualities.
For top schools, yes. I think you know that.
