Okay. I'm not terrible at math (all Bs) and I want to be a computer engineer (also I'm highly motivated and willing to get tutoring or go to office hours if I have a problem). I have a ~3.65 gpa 24 ACT and already accepted to my states S&T school for CPEng. I am motivated to work but my problem is that all the other engineering students (or the ones I have talked to) are like top of their class with *ing 5.8 gpa (yes exaggeration) and 40s on their ACTs (still exaggeration). So can an average joe like me really become an engineer w/ only motivation? Or are all engineers like Woz and Gates?
P.s please don't give me * about my stats. That's not what this is about.

Bro I have a learning disability and I am going to pursue engineering. my friend who didnt do to well in high school actually went to community college for the first two years also had a learning disability and graduated from aerospace engineering AND got a job. so yes you can do well in engineering if you are dedicated and willing to work hard and ask help.

There are far more engineers in the world than there are geniuses. On that basis alone, no.

Also, from my personal experience, engineers aren’t appreciably smarter than anyone else. More interested in math and science definitely, but most certainly not smarter.

Hey thanks you guys. I guess I just needed some encouragement. It just seems to me that every poster on this damn website (especially the engineering forum) is always posting cough boasting cough about their incredible gpa and brains the size of TX. But on second thought they could all be full of BS for all I know!

If you have nothing special to boast about, you simply won’t say anything. That’s what pretty much everyone does.

College confidential is not representative of the college population.

I knew a lot of engineering majors in college, and none of them were any smarter or more hard working than people in other majors. There are people of all different skills, backgrounds, and strengths in every major. Do what you like, work hard at it, and you’ll be fine.

As Stephen Hawking once said: “People who brag about their IQs are losers.”

I do agree that the folks who cough up their entire resumes in various threads are excessive, obnoxious, and a tad arrogant. And yes, a lot of them are in the engineering forum. But honestly getting straight As does not make you “smart” in my opinion. There is a huge difference between a student who studies to get an A and a student who studies for the knowledge. I strive to study for (and then remember) the knowledge. I’m not saying grades are not important (they are). But a grade is a temporary thing and knowledge is forever.

I am an engineering student but I don’t feel any more or less special than any other student out there. If you are willing to work hard and are really passionate about your field of study, you will succeed. Good luck! :)

Engineers in general are people who want a pragmatic job and who understood what physics and math are about (practically), but aren’t primarily interested in scientific research, philosophical questions or scientific proofs. The emphasis is on doing things and getting things done.

Nowadays engineering is in many ways the degree for someone who wants to work in existing industrial settings or practical technical jobs (which there are many to choose from). Some also use engineering background as a more “practical” science basis for researching new applications with a pragmatic rather than pure scientific motivation. Engineers want solutions that make use of natural resources and produce useful things out of them, they want to make life easier and more satisfying.

My son’s engineering freshman roommates were definitely not geniuses and I think they all graduated although some probably had to put in more effort than others.

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

He’s right.
