When I visited, the students seemed kunda silly/ immature, especially compared to students at umich who seemed very serious and grade driven when i visited. im obviously generalizing but would i be a total loser/ social outcast if i actually care about my grades? i do want to party in college but maybe not to the extent of the osu kids. will i be able to find a group of friends like me that want to have fun but also take school seriously?

Also, if im oos, will it be hard for me to make friends? it seems a huge majority of kids are from ohio/went to high school together, so would i be like left out?

thanks! and sorry for grammar/spelling; im on mobile

I’m going to OSU this year, and I’m OOS too! I’m not that worried about the whole making friends thing, I know a few people who went there not knowing anyone and they absolutely love it!

And I’m the same way, I do love to party but my grades are really important to me, especially because I’m doing pre-med. I joined the Facebook group and there’s lots of kids like that so you shouldn’t be too concerned :)

OSU students are the opposite of studious–so much so that it’s viewed as almost “uncool” to take an interest in your classes. Ugh, to be honest, it’s why I transferred out. I wanted to be among people who were more dedicated to their work, and I wanted a leg-up for graduate school. In many of my classes, students bragged about not doing the work, and then they complained when they actually had to do it. A lot of people never bought the books, and they certainly never brought the books with them to class.

You could probably “find a group” of friends who are more serious about classes (or in honors), but you still have to sit in classrooms all day with people who just don’t care, who sleep through everything, who are openly hostile to new ideas. It can wear you down after a while. Seriously, I would recommend that really serious students think about going elsewhere. It’s a great party school, but not really a “liberal arts college,” if you know what I mean. It’s all about the teams, the parties, the frats, the buckeyes.

You can’t possibly generalize 43 thousand students as being either studious or not. Some are, some aren’t. If you are looking to make friends with students who take their studies seriously, I recommend you choose a rigorous major, and live in an honors dorm if possible. Plenty of students in difficult majors take their work seriously.

I don’t know what made malia56’s experience so poor at OSU, but my experience has not been the same. OSU has become more and more selective over time, which translates into smarter and more serious students. OSU may have a great party life, but that hardly means that the majority of students here aren’t interested in their education.

Also, while a lot of us come from Ohio, most of us make new friends and don’t exclusively hang out with people we knew in high school. There isn’t much of a reason why someone from out of state would have a more difficult time adjusting. Most people tend to make friends with people they meet in the dorms, and in their major classes.

So I have to wonder malia56. Why have you only posted on the Ohio State site, and why only negative postings ? If you transferred out I would think that you would be equally interested in posting positives about the school you transferred to. I would also think that you would walk away from OSU and not look back. I suspect there is more to the story.

I’m still waiting on honors but the fact that I haven’t heard by now is probably a bad sign. I would have liked to have been in honors dorms to be around people more like me but if that isn’t an option… Idk. And yeah it is very difficult to generalize such a big student body but that was the vibe I got when I visited. I visited Purdue the day after and it didn’t seem like that

I received my Honors Program letter today, and I live in southern Ohio. So for all the prospective Honors Program students, you should be receiving your letters sometime soon I would guess!

What do your grades need to be like for honors? I wont be going fool around and all the kids who end up at OSU from my school are those kind of people
