Is Pacific Islander a URM?

If I'm ethnically Pacific Islander, does anyone know how that affects college admissions? I've heard some people say it's a hook because it's a very rare URM (at some colleges there are only a few in the entire university), while others say that it's under the Asian umbrella so it could actually hurt your chances.
Also, I am Filipina so does that 'count' as Pacific Islander? Obviously it is a nation of islands and in the Pacific but some people have told me that I'd more likely be considered Asian.

The census considers Filipino as Asian (http://factfinder2.census.gov/help/en/glossary/a/asian.htm</a>), perhaps some colleges consider it differently, but that would be on an institution-by-institution basis.

As far as being considered Asian hurting your chances? It depends on the university. If Asian is an ORM, and it is a college that is even allowed to consider race/ethnicity in admissions, it may have a slight negative impact. As I like to think about it though, this is something that is out of your control, so there’s no sense in worrying about it.

You would be applying as an international student, or are you a US citizen? If you are an international, acceptance is more difficult because schools only take so many noncitizens.

I’m American

Nice try, Pacific Islanders are people like Guam, Micronesia, etc…

Filipino is considered Asian.

“Pacific islander” typically refers to Hawaiians, Samoans, Tongans, Chamorro (Guam), Fijians, etc…

If they don’t change it again, the first Q is about Hispanic or Latino, then: regardless of how you answered the previous question – “to identify as American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, black or African American, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, or white.” If you answer Asian, there should still be room to further add Fillipina. How it helps does depend on the specific colleges.

The concern about Asian American discrimination is hotly debated, not confirmed. Apply to the right colleges for you and you will get a fair review.

Do u have a Spanish last name? I had a filipino friend w last name Garcia. He was counted as hispanic.
