Are practice tests an accurate gauge of SAT score?

Hi all, I want to know your experiences with SAT tests… I took the SAT on November and scored a 1360 (680 both math and english) without studying. I just wanted to see how I would do. Now, I am taking the SAT in January and I’m cramming like crazy during the winter break lol. I’m in SAT prep classes right now and we study from 9-3 and then do a full length practice test, lasting me until 5-6. I thought this cramming was beneficial somewhat but maybe it has confused me, because my practice test grades are falling to the mid 1300s to1250s. What do you guys suppose this is: are my prep classes making it worse, are these tests at the end of the day limiting my ability to focus/score higher, or is it just too late to cram right now?? heh thank you

It is not too late. And if you can score 1360 with no prep, it is reasonable to hope for substantial improvement. So about those practice scores:

  1. What tests are you using? The most accurate currently available are #5 and #6 from the college board. Then, 1 - 4 are your next best bet. If you are using tests from any other source, then don't put too much emphasis on how you are scoring. Just worry about whether you are learning the relevant material and techniques.
  2. Even if the tests are real, taking a test after a 6-hour cram session is not going to lead you to your personal best. Fatigue lowers your score in ways you don't realize.

So I would just keep learning the material, not obsessing too much about the interim results. Your 1360 was real. Build on that.

I agree that you should use the official CB tests to practice. My D started out with a PSAT score just slightly higher than yours. Her timed SAT practice tests ranged between 1400-1500. Her real SAT test fell within that range.

How are you “cramming”? Does your course go over mistakes in the practice tests to determine the reason for the errors? That is the best way to improve your score.

Also, are you seeing a drop in your math score? It is easy to make math errors when you are fatigued. The SAT math problems are very wordy so if you are tired, it is easy to misinterpret what the question is asking.

Maybe take a real CB practice test in the morning on the weekend when you are fresh and see how it goes.

Good luck!

Ah yes, actually im dropping the most in reading because I just don’t feel like reading those long passages. I’m planning on looking at CB tests on my own next week or so. Thank you!

Thank you! I’ll be looking at 5 and 6 soon. I was stressing because my practice test scores were falling everytime, but I think it’s because I’m half dead by then. The tests are from Peterson(?) and McGraw
