Just realized that there is a week left to register for SAT subject tests-- My daughter has been looking on every school’s website to see whether they are required for VP, and doesn’t think so, but I thought we could double check here as well. CMU, U Michigan, Northwestern, Rice, Florida State, Eastman, U of Md, Ithaca. She is interested in straight music. Thanks!
CMU requires two subject matter tests
Ithaca does not require SAT scores.
call admissions at the schools…
Eastman does not require subject tests; Rice doesn’t require them if you take the ACT with Writing; FSU does not require subject tests; Northwestern does not require them of music applicants; U Maryland doesn’t require them; U Michigan
Thank you, drummergirl! I did eventually call the offices today and you were spot on! Cookerdee- they are not required at CMU for vocal performance majors.
You’re so welcome! We discovered that it was a more typical requirement of the liberal arts schools such as Wesleyan
Sorry bout that. It was required of music majors 3 years ago when my daughter applied. The only thing I would add is that it is always a good idea to have some SAT subject tests “in the bag”. As you never know what will happen. A new school gets added to the list, or the student changes their mind and doesn’t want to pursue music after all. Having them keeps your options open.
Just fyi: here is a list of test-optional schools http://fairtest.org/university/optional
She has taken the SAT and one subject test already (fall of junior year), but did well enough that she was contemplating not testing anymore. But I guess she needs another subject test for a few of the schools (or to take the ACT, which she might do instead).
i understand keeping your options open - my first two kids needed all the various subject tests and AP tests to be considered for their first-choice schools. But I think it can be overwhelming and a waste of time when your kid is focused on the BM route. A solid SAT or ACT score is enough, in my opinion.
ACT with writing worked everywhere from Rice and Northwestern to CIM and Boulder.
