Are South Asians considered an URM at LACs?

Hi, I'm an Indian female looking into some LACs such as Kenyon, Bowdoin, and Middlebury.

Just wondering if they are considered an URM since LACs are generally majority white.

I don't know if this is a stupid/offensive question haha, but I was just wondering if it was true.

Thanks!

Well technically, you would be a URM, but it wouldn’t help you. Really, the only races that help you get in substantially are Hispanic and African American. Actually, there is a lot of talk that being an Asian student hurts your chances.

As unfair as it is, west cultures see people from India and other asian countries as being unnaturally smart. With that assumption, they’ll be even harder on Asians than on whites or URMs. I don’t think that this is on purpose, but people tend to have higher expectations for Asian students. If your name isn’t obviously Asian, then you should check the others box for race.

Good luck!

South Asians are considered URMs at a number of LACs in the midwest and south but not in the Northeast or west. So it helps at Kenyon but not at Middlebury or Bowdoin. Take a look at Grinnell, Hendrix, and Rhodes, for example.

Underrepresented means just that: they are under represented at the colleges and in professions:
African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans (American Indians -originating on this continent-Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians), Pacific Islanders, and Mainland Puerto Ricans.
South Asians and Asians in general are not under represented in the colleges and universities.

This is an old thread but it might help you figure out how the schools you are interested in would treat you.

@cmarshall it’s actually to increase the diversity on campus. if everyone was held to the same standard, there would be a more disproportionate race distribution
