Are students from a university referred to by their mascot name?

Students of Rice are called Owls, and their mascot is an owl. USC students are called Trojans. So is there some sort of pattern?
For example, kids from Rochester are not called YELLOWJACKETS but their mascot is Rocky the Yellowjacket.. Sorry for the dumb question, im looking for a new angle to write my WHY XYZ COLLEGE essays.

@Shrabasti, oh I thought the Yellow Jackets were Georgia Tech Kids!

Short Answer: Not Necessarily.
Harvard’s mascot is John Harvard; the kids are called crimsonites from the color crimson. The student can be called anything that’s convenient and catchy. The name can depend on anything, the mascots, the school’s name (for e.g. IITians) or on school’s color (if it’s something unique like crimson).
