Are the two schedules there good? Should I follow it exactly? it seems like 3 classes every quarter is super low

These are likely not %100 up to date. There’s an error in the first one- they have CMPS 12/L listed for winter of year 1. Class doesn’t exist. I think they meant to put CMPE 12/L.

The quarter a certain course is offered switches up sometimes, and doesn’t get reflected in those plans. They are an advisory about the two main paths through the major. Following them to the letter probably isn’t possible, based on what GEs you need or class availability. On the quarter system, 3 classes + labs is the norm. Any class that has a / somewhere in the name means that there is a lab with extra units. As an engineer you’ll likely be pulling 17-19 unit quarters a lot of the time instead of the suggested 15 units.

I think the second plan is flawed in that they don’t give you any intro to Java before CMPS 12B/L, which has been detrimental to the CE majors I know who took that route. That’s my two cents anyhow.

thanks for the response,
so would you suggest just a math class, crown core, and some form of computer engineering for my first quarter? seems simple enough

Oh and people tell me to not take the intro programming class if I have programming experience, how much programming experience is enough to bypass that intro class?

On the department’s website they should have the major requirements.

<a href=“Computer Science and Engineering – Baskin School of Engineering”>Computer Science and Engineering – Baskin School of Engineering;

Under “Major Requirements”

And 3 classes a quarter is really all you’ll want or need, you don’t need to be an overachiever and feel guilt if you aren’t in 6 classes, the quarter system doesn’t work that way.

Core+Math definitely your first quarter. Absolutely CE/CS if you can manage. Putting it off for your first quarter won’t set you back. As for bypassing the intro course, depends on which intro you’re talking about.

You can bypass 5J (absolute intro-to-programming, first plan) if you understand basic program structure (loop types), data types, and how to make+call functions.

You can bypass 12A (accelerated intro, assumes some knowledge, second plan) if you are familiar with objects and object-oriented programming, input/string manipulation, and array manipulation.

Ive taken two programming classes at my local community college, if I transfer them here, is there a chance it can fulfill part of my major requirement. And also, will it affect my GPA? because if it does… that really sucks.

Also if I take core and math but not computer eng, would I just take 2 classes, or another GE?

I’m not sure. I took an intro to programming course in Java at CC, got a B in it, but it didn’t transfer. Apparently someone else did similar to me at a different CC and it did transfer. So you’ll really have to check with the school on this one. I’m almost positive they don’t affect your GPA.

You’d need to take 3 classes. You need a minimum of 12 units, and both core and math will be 5 units.
