Are the students at Middlebury intellectual?

What I mean is to understand the typical type of student. Do people at Middlebury have a genuine interest in learning? Is it cool to be well-read? Are there discussions about life and the status quo? I am a senior in HS who will probably apply to Midd. Just wondering if the students are "intellectuals" or just care about getting top grades. Thanks.

Yes.

Hard to answer that question, but I can tell you, I met some of the smartest people I’ve ever known while I was a student there. I also spent many afternoons and evenings having deep intellectual conversations outside the classroom. These were the kind of discussions they portray in movies about “intellectual college life,” the kind that rarely happen in real life.

Like all of its NESCAC peers, there are many very bright people at Midd interested in thinking and being well-read. If it’s angst you are experiencing, you may be happier being slightly misunderstood anyway…
