Are there any colleges with thrift store van access available on move-out day?

My dd moved out in May from her university. While everyone was moving out, the trash bins were full of furniture, clothes, hangers, monitors, lamps, rubbermaid containers, pots/pans, towels, etc. Most of the students and their parents couldn't squeeze in another thing into their cars.

We drove out of our way to a local Salvation Army store who were thrilled to receive her barely used refrigerator, lamps, bookshelves, vacuum cleaners, desk accessories, surfboard, etc.

Given our concerns about the environment, I'm wondering why this isn't done. With #2 dd's move-out from UC in two weeks, I hate to see all of of those reusable items thrown out

What a great idea!

This would be a great community service project for students willing to organize it.

Boston College had a ‘service’ on campus to accept donations. They even had helpers to assist with hauling out the furniture.

See this thread for what some schools do:

Thanks Kiddie!!!

Washington and Lee has a local charity van outside of all the dorms during moveout.

As the thread kiddie linked to,shows…many colleges use these leftover things to raise funds for charities. It’s an excellent idea!.

Some Goodwills actually bring their trucks to a campus on move out days… If you have certain items and call the Salvation Army or Goodwill they may stage a pick up.
