Somewhere on this board, several people talked about how their son or daughter's school has a system where the student dump items they don't want in designated spots at year end, and the university sponsors a school wide garage sale. I even remember one poster saying their school made 30kfor charity that year selling student castoffs! Does anyone know a school that does this, or how to find the link on this board? it is such a great idea!

Wellesley does-- but the proceeds go to funding sustainability, not charity.

Both Lehigh and Penn do it. In fact Lehigh’s sale is this Saturday and the proceeds do go to charity :-)

St. Lawrence University…started as an end of school year event, and has changed to a year round thrift store.

Add Swarthmore to the list.

Cornell does it. It’s called Dump and Run.

Oh, yes, I knew about SLU’s. UCONN also lets students leave items in the hallways of residence halls, gets donated to Salvation Army Stores or similiar charities.

Some of these students throw away perfectly good items, that ought to be put to good use.

It’s not a sale, but Bard maintains a “Free Store” where students can leave/get a wide variety of items.

American U did it this year.

University of Missouri does it. It’s called Tiger Treasures and it’s held at the football stadium on the first Saturday in June. It’s open to the public. The campus Sustainability Office sets up donation sites in all the residence halls and Greek houses at the end of the semester. Proceeds go to community charities.

Notre Dame also has a sale and the proceeds go to South Bend’s Homeless Center.

University of Illinois has this but it’s sponsored by the YMCA, not U of I. It’s also called Dump and Run. They collect items in May but don’t sell them until August when the students are moving back in. Very popular amongst the international students.

UIllinois-UC does this. It is called Dump and Run and the sale is the weekend before classes start in August. The “Y” runs it.

I didn’t realize that Lehigh’s was this weekend! I’m going to have to send my guys over there to check it out. Wish I didn’t have to work! This is such a good idea. My older son and his roomies did quite a bit of their house furnishings from dumpster diving from their fellow students. Actually it was more of a freecycle sort of thing where the College had specific dumpsters for used, buy not trash items, and students were free to pick from it and then it was hauled to a nearby Salvation Army. Such a good idea. Found a link with details for others. http://www4.lehigh.edu/news/newsarticle.aspx?Channel=%2FChannels%2FNews%3A+2011&WorkflowItemID=dd3683f5-d6ff-48a4-81ba-affaaca62a76

When my son moved back home last Spring after college graduation, he and his roommates took several trips to Sal Val to unload their already second-hand stuff.

Gettysburg College does it also. According to their website, the furniture and household items donated by departing students this year raised about $14,000 for the United Way of Adams County and prevented approximately 25 tons of goods from simply being discarded.

Harvard does.

Penn State as well.
