I'm afraid I will not fit in at all at this school, even though I love so many things about it...

Are there artsy, intellectual, indie music-loving, creative people at this school who want to spend their weekends talking about philosophy and music instead of puking up beer in a frat house? If I'm one of these people will I feel on the outs? No mean comments, just answers please :)

Not to worry. I’m told that the entire south campus is filled with people like you. There are theater performance majors, lit majors, journalism majors, film majors, music majors, dance majors, the whole kettle.

If you read the Northwestern Roommates page you’d see how many people like bands like Passion Pit, Mumford, Sufjan, etc. Everyone is intelligent and quirky at NU, so there are plenty of people like what you described. Although you have to realize that you need to work with many people, even the frat guys. If you hang out with people just like you, then you won’t expand your mindset.

I’ve met several frat guys at Northwestern who I’d classify as hipsters (in a good way), so the two are by no means mutually exclusive at NU. Many Fraternities and Sororities at NU may not be at all what you are imagining.

Yes. My daughter is definitely a hipster (an engineer/dancer who is going to see the Shins next month and has seen of Montreal about 5 times, but who loves world music as well), but she doesn’t have attitude. She’ll talk to everyone and anyone. As was mentioned, there are lots of cerebral types, and the Greek scene is way lower than 50% (about 35%). I mean, really, Will Butler of Arcade Fire graduated from NU with a major in Slavic studies.
