Are there internships that aren't legitimate?

I'm an advertising major and recently I sent my resume to a new company called Evolve Group. It says they're entertainment marketing but I think they market mostly for bars and nightclub events. So is it still a legitimate internship even though they promote nightclubs? If I put it on my resume as a marketing internship will it look bad?

Who cares what they promote? Bars and nightclubs ARE a major source of entertainment.

There are internships out there that aren’t legitimate, but your basis for that evaluation should focus on the work you will do and the pay you will receive, not the subsection of an industry.

I don’t know. I know that there are some people who add others randomly on Facebook and it just so happens they turn out to be club promoters. I’ve accepted a friend request from someone like that and every week I’ll get an invite for a weekend club party. I’m not sure if this internship will have work related to stuff like that, and I don’t know if doing that is legitimate marketing work. Also I know this company is fairly new.

It sounds like you’ve got some questions about the exact nature of the work you’d be doing in this internship–which, fortunately, you’ll be able to ask about in an interview, or by e-mail if it’s appropriate. You should be able to judge what sort of responsibilities would be good work experience for you and your career goals. Don’t try to overanalyze the company based on some scraps of information.
