i was accepted ED so i'm def. going to penn. i dont like parties or drinking...i'm not against oher people doing it, i just enjoy having fun other ways. will it be hard to find a group of friends like me? it seems like everyone at penn is into partying

I dont like drinking and i don’t like parties.
I visited Penn earlier this week for Scholars Preview
and there is a gang of people just like us.
There were parties while i was there but our group stuck together
and had lots of fun.

I applied RD but i’m thinking of attending.

Are you kidding? If you look on FB for the “Official UPenn Class of 2015 Group” you’ll find on the roomies thread that there are tons of people like you. I don’t really drink either, even though I’m actually legal in my country. :)

Do not worry. Penn is cool! If you look for people that enjoy themselves without drinking or partying, thats what you will find.

I’m not, either! I was sort of wondering what would become of my NSO experience…

I also got in ED and don’t like drinking/partying. It’s very comforting to see that I’m not the only one. :)

I’m almost exactly like you and I’m nearly 100% sure I’m going to Penn this fall.

I hope you guys keep your promise. I will be impressed if after a year or two you are still sober.

It’s not a promise to anyone or anything. I’ve actually drank (legally, in my country) and I just don’t like the taste of most things.

There are people across the whole spectrum at Penn so there are plenty of people who don’t like to drink or go to parties and they are perfectly happy. There are also many people who didn’t party at all high school but who do now.

I’m seriously considering Penn and I’m close friends with another girl from my school who’s definitely going, and neither of us drink/party. It’s not that I’m totally opposed to the idea, I just generally don’t like the whole scene and mindset associated with it – so no, you’re not alone. :)

I’ll be one! ED as well. I’ve heard it’s fine. As long as you find a group that doesn’t like to drink and party, and then you can hang out and find loads of other fun things to do.

“I’m nearly 100% sure I’m going to Penn this fall.”

I’m nearly sure this is down to 20% now

^ Hope it wasn’t just because of the column in today’s DP.

^ That has a lot to do with it.

Well, before you give up on what had been one of your favorite schools because of one column by a single person, you should read all the comments in that thread (including my post #3: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1130583-troubling-story-racist-behavior.html), and also the comments accompanying the article itself on the DP site. I’d especially direct your attention to this comment on the DP site (which I didn’t write, but I think is insightful):

Keep in mind that more than 43% of Penn’s Class of 2014 is from a multicultural background (to use the Admissions Office’s term). Do you really think that so many of those students would go there if the general environment (including faculty, administration, and other students) were more hostile and less welcoming than at other top schools? :)

That was helpful, I guess it was wrong for my erratic reaction, thanks, Penn was and now is again the school that I think I’ll be going with.

^ Terrific! Glad to be of some help.

Personally, I think that the most important thing students can learn in college–and something that’s sorely missing from the public discourse in this country today–is the ability to gather and critically evaluate real facts, and then to put them into a proper and reasonable overall context.

In my class, you now get an “A.” ;)

Wow. They published an article like that at a time like this?
Back to the main topic, though, count me in! I’m pleasantly surprised to see so many responses, actually :D

The Daily Pennsylvanian is an independent newspaper, so they will publish whatever they want (though often it is just drivel).

Seriously, though, the charge that Penn is racist is absurd. Realistically, EVERYWHERE YOU GO there is racism of some sort. Penn really does go out of its way to welcome every walk of life, and using Fling as an example of anything is just a poor choice, especially since half the people on campus weren’t Penn students anyway.
