- Sophomore in HS, female, white, lower-middle class, attends Catholic all-girls school, NE ohio
- I'm applying to a group in my city that focuses on teaching teens the inner workings of local government and how teenagers can make change in the community. It's a service-based group, and I would be oriented and volunteer at various events throughout the city. Membership only lasts a year but graduating from the program would potentially allow me to join the Youth Advisory council for the Mayor's office and help contribute to teen decisions.
- I'm considering starting a chapter of I Am That Girl either in my school or based in the city I live in. IATG is a national nonprofit focused on 'shifting girl culture' and lifting up the young women around you. There are no chapters for high schools in my area. As a leader, I would plan events and group discussions for girls ages 14-18. I'm not 100% sure on pursuing this yet though, please give opinions.
- Will be applying to be in youth ambassador program with Ohio's attorney general. I'd meet twice in the state's capital to help offer solutions to issues that affect teenagers specifically in Ohio. I know i haven't even applied yet, but would this EC help if I did it?
My other ECs currently are
- Speech team (not very much of a competitor, but I enjoy it, hoping to get better)
- Student government (VP of class freshman year, class rep in schoolwide gov this year)
- Ambassadors club (represent the school at admissions and fundraising events)
- Staff writer for the school newspaper
- Social action club
Outside of school, I volunteer at a local food distribution program for food-insecure families and a bilingual education group for the Latino community (I am not Latino nor do I speak Spanish, but I help the kids learn to read English).
All of these causes are things I’m actually passionate about (social justice specifically in my city, female empowerment, law, politics). In college I’m planning on double-majoring in political science and I’m not sure what else yet, potentially education or counseling.
Thoughts? Will these ECs help me?
