Are they nice??

I was watching their BBall game Vs. Gonzaga the other day and was turned off by the actions of SCU students.

First, a student threw a bottle at the court.
Even after the SCU coach told them over the mic not to throw anything again, another student threw more garbage on the court.
And I can't be sure, but I think I heard a chant along the lines of calling Gonzaga 'Bull,' a pun on the Bulldog mascot.

AND after all that, I heard that SCU students beat up the kids who threw stuff on the court.

I was really turned off by all of this from SCU.
Especially these actions at a Jesuit school.
Anyone care to tell me something nice about SCU to change my mind?

Well, first of all it was two different people that threw the bottle and the tin foil onto the court. From what i heard, the kid that guy beat up was a gonzaga fan that somehow snuck into our student section. Don't let what happened at the game make your decision about coming to SCU or not. I assure you, everyone at SCU is extremely nice and that game totally does not represent us at a student body as a whole. Feel free to ask me any other questions about SCU and i'll try to answer them as completely as i can.

Haha, thanks.
I'm trying not to let it cloud my mind.
But it's hard to think of SCU w/out thinking of that.

Anyway... what year are you and what were your stats for getting in?
Wait, you go to SCU, right?

I'm class of 2012. undeclared business in leavey school of business. (prospective AIS major)

My high school stats:
3.3gpa UW, 3.8 W
1970 SAT 1
730 MATH2C
720 BIO
-captain of my high school baseball team
-president of car club
-started online business my sophomore year in high school

I had a lot more stuff but it's kinda long to list but those were my basic stats. Haha, ah college admissions seems so long ago actually i almost didnt even remember all of those things! But yeah, def take a look into Santa Clara because it is totally AWESOME. Check out a preview day because that really helped me decide that i wanted to come here. So far.. i have done so many things already both academically and socially that i seriously did not think Santa Clara could provide (i was actually thinking about going to Cal, UCI or UCD because all of my friends were going there).

Also, please check out sculife.com ! It is a site seniors at our school have started and it will become scu's online community website. Hopefully and eventually, all students will have it as there homepage. We are adding a lot of cool features right now and look forward to an admitted section soon. (it will be a lot better than the Accepted to the Santa Clara Class of 2013 Facebook group). -- feel free to post and start being involved with the scu community.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Cheers,
dannyhuangster

danny, do you mind to share a litter more about your HS stat? What AP classes did you take? Was your high school a catholic feeder school, a private or public? My daugher is also interested in leavey school of businees, she is a junior and in the process of scheduling her senior year class. Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much Danny!
That's really helped!
I already am MORE interested in SCU now!

a_mom, personally, at my hs, SCU is known as one of the easier Jesuit schools to get into. Compared to LMU & USD at least. I go to catholic school btw.

Love that site by the way!
I think that once it grows more, it would be a great place for perspective students to go to seek advice about attending SCU.

Anyway, I have two more questions if you don't mind answering them:
1) Do you know how financial aid is?
2) Do you know a lot about Greek life?

My daughter is in public school, so I'm not sure it's going to be easy for her.
She has a friend got deferred from EA.

@a_mom

I took AP Stats, AP Psychology, AP Calc AB, and AP Biology. I went to a public high school in California (it's actually only 30-40 minutes away) from SCU. It's one of the top public schools in the nation and #1/#2 in California (haven't really checked) but it was extremely competitive so it was pretty hard to get good grades. My senior year i only took AP Stats, but you should try to have your daughter take two AP's.

The Business School is a lot more competitive this year and they have narrowed the people they will be accepting from now on. As long as your daughter has solid SAT scores, pretty good GPA, a lot of after school activities (sports, clubs, community service) and a great essay, i think she would have a great chance to get in.

You can go onto SCULife - Come. Share. Connect. and post and see what other current students have to say about her chances. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask me!

Cherielia,
I have to disagree with you. Comparing SCU, LMU and USD, I would say SCU is the most competitive of those three schools. See admissions stats below from Collegedata.com.

Santa Clara:
CLASS OF 2013 PROFILES
Avg. GPA 3.59 unweighted 3.91 weighted
Avg. SAT 624 (M) 612 (CR) 623 (W)
Avg. ACT 28

LMU:
CLASS OF 2013 PROFILES
Avg. GPA 3.52 unweighted 3.72 weighted
Avg. SAT 592 (M) 581 (CR) 602 (W)
Avg. ACT 26

USD:
CLASS OF 2013 PROFILES
Avg. GPA 3.48 unweighted 3.77 weighted
Avg. SAT 591 (M) 577 (CR) 589 (W)
Avg. ACT 26

Oh. Wow, seriously.
I definitely have been under the impression that USD is the hardest to get into out of all of them.
But my school trends tend to be different than others.

@cherielia

Thanks for checking out the site, it currently has over 4000 visitors and we have no released the site to the students/community yet. Feel free to post in the Prospective Student section because a lot of current students will reply.

I'm not really sure about financial aid other than it really ranges. I have friends who are receiving as low as 3k and some that are paying way less than UC's here (probably more than 15k). Best way is to wait for your aid or call the Financial Aid Office and ask.

Greek Life isn't as big here compared to UC's or larger private schools (mainly because the school no longer recognizes greek). HOWEVER, a lot of people do join greek and it is extremely fun. I'm actually thinking about rushing AKPSI (professional business frat) this spring and maybe even PIKE next winter (mainly because one of my bestfriends is one).

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Yeah, that is totally not true. Out of all of them i believe that SCU is one of the most prestigious. Especially the business school, it is starting to become extremely hard to get into. Check out sculife.com, in the other section and "what others say about the university". SCU business has recently went up to #32 and has gotten better stats then CAL. However, they rank higher than us because their tuition is cheaper and scores are higher.

danny, thanks for all the info, esp. the SCULife link.

No problem. If you guys have anymore questions feel free to ask me!

My daughter is a junior engineering major at SCU. She came from a public high school. SCU does accept students from public high schools.

There are actually around 10-12 students from my school last year. My school was a major UC school though, almost everyone went to UC's. over 70 people got into CAL.

Thanks so much!
I like that SCU has a greek life, W/ HOUSES!
It's the only catholic school I've found w/ greek life w/ houses.
I also like that it's not GIGANTIC, I'm not up for greeks controlling the whole school.
Just a nice little community to be a part of.

Ugh.
I would love to go to SCU or any other catholic university.
But money is a gigantic issue.
My heart is SET on a jesuit school.
But my parents make <90k a year, a good amount of which goes to my family in our home country.
I guess I've just got to keep my fingers crossed and pray for a miracle.

Less than 9% of the students at SCU are involved in the Greek system. I don't know about the frats, but my understanding is that the sorority houses are used for sorority functions, but only the officers live in them. The school does not sponsor the Greek system at all. They used to, but discontinued that a bunch of years ago. In addition, I believe that some of the events sponsored by the fraternities and sororities are also open to other students. So..if you're looking for a small Greek system, SCU has it.

My daughter tells me that there is no shortage of university sponsored clubs and activities for students to become involved in. In addition, the residential learning communities (aka dorms) provide social and community service activities as well.

Everyone we met there on our visits has been very friendly and helpful.

Danny, the engineering program is also quite competitive.

Oh. Only the officers live in them?
Oh well, I guess it doesn't really matter anymore.
I pretty much just realized that unless I get a miracle, private school is out of the question.
