Are three AP classes enough?

@nerdymathmama‌ lol mines is 10 points for AP, 8 points for honors, none regular

Wow @nerdymathmama‌! The amount of AP classes your daughter took is plentiful! Im just not smart enough. I would like to know what college she got into. Hopefully Ivy or a college 4.0+.

@purplerflower‌ Oh really? Good luck to you too. I understand people take only three or so AP classes, but I need to get into UGA and my gpa is horrible. I’m at a 3.9 right now and with the classes I have, I may not be able to get in. I’m not on of those smart folks either and go to a school where everyone takes rigorous classes. And believe me, it is very difficult, at least for me.

@topaz1116‌ Those are some rigorous courses. Have you taken any other AP classes than those? If so, may I know what? I’m assuming your gonna be a senior next year, judging by you choice of AP Calculus BC and not taking a block math class. Good luck man.

@purplerflower‌ @topaz1116‌ What college/universities would you like to attend?

@APthreepointnine actually, I’m going to be a junior next year. I’ve never taken an AP course before (I stupidly switched out of AP Stats this year to go to a stupid Engineering class), as my school doesn’t offer many for sophomores. But I find my schedule right now (three honors courses, including one that is UC weighted and is usually taken by juniors, and a DE Spanish course; basically the max that I could take unless I had been smart enough to stay in AP Stats) stupidly easy, so I’m hoping next year will be a step up. My school doesn’t have block scheduling.

I really want to go to MIT, Stanford, or Harvey Mudd, but they’re crapshoots for everyone and there are people who have taken/will be taking more rigorous schedules (or at least will be taking more APs, even if several are easy) than me. And I don’t have a 4.0 GPA due to some screw-ups in English freshman year. If I end up in the top 15% of my class (the only rank approximation my school makes, and that’s through UW GPA since we don’t weight), I’ll be there by a hair.

@APthreepointnine‌ …D applied to 5 schools and was accepted to all…NC State, UVA, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Auburn. No decision made yet…waiting on scholarships before deciding!

Remember, AP classes are simply the appropriate level for some kids. Anything less would be boring. Nerdymathmama is lucky her daughter has so many ap classes available.

Also, not all schools even have electives or honors courses. Sometimes it’s a choice between remedial, normal, or AP for your core courses.

I agree!

@topaz1116‌ yeah, my device didn’t refresh, so I didn’t find how we advanced in this thread lol. Wow, those are some pretty good classes. Is you UC class this year AB Calculus? Yeah, I’m doing horrible in Honors Chemistry right now, other wise I was going to take AP Chemistry or maybe IB Chemistry SL. Good luck in those classes though (I heard BC Calculus is a pain though) How are you doing in AB by the way? @topaz1116‌

@nerdymathmama‌ Wow, those schools are gartifying. Lots of people in my school want to get into GA Tech, but that’s only for instate (Probably looking for Stanford or something like that). After I saw your daughter’s weighted GPA I was astonished! But then when the scale was explained, it made more sense. Hope you for the best for you and your daughter!

@APthreepointnine‌ taking Honors Precalc right now, and I’m doing okay because H. Precalc at my school has five-question tests and no partial credit and I make a lot of dumb mistakes. I managed to get an A- first semester, though, so I can take AP Calc BC next year. People generally don’t take Calc AB then BC at my school because most who have the opportunity to take Precalc sophomore year end up in BC junior year, and those who don’t take Stats or Discrete senior year.

The only reason I’m on the border in Chem is that my teacher is super anal about how you do homework and labs. Even if I had gotten 100% on all the tests, I would have a 93%, and I don’t get 100% on every single test. I make mistakes. Therefore, I have a 90 flat. Thankfully, second semester just started and I know his grading style to some extent by now.

Nice. In my school a few of my friends are taking Accelerated Precalculus over the summer and took AB Calculus and will take BC next year. For us if you take Precalculus as a sophomore, then you can take AB/BC as a block class. I couldn’t take even Accelerated Precalculus, so I am taking Precalculus next year. I wander what I should take as a senior for math… maybe Math Studies. I don’t really know.

@topaz1116‌

@APthreepointnine what’s Math Studies? Also, I just found out I got a 97% on my chem final (and I could have gotten a 99%–stupid labels), so I got a 91% as my final grade in the class.

IB Math Studies SL. Nice, I have like an 83 :frowning: . Messed up first semester.

@topaz1116‌

I don’t have any experience with IB biology but I found AP biology quite interesting and really loved it. It also wasn’t too challenging, I really do think it depends on your school. I am currently taking AP US history and I find that it’s a lot of reading. If you wanted to get ahead for either class I think you should get some prep books ( Barron’s is great for AP Bio & I find that kaplan’s APUSH book works quite well). Although ap us history is a lot of reading I don’t find the actual class too difficult to get an A in. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Thanks for the information @Camilouisee‌ . Yeah, I found out that I didn’t get recommended for IB Biology SL and have to take AP Environmental Science which sucks, because I was planning to take that my senior year. Oh well. By the way @Camilouisee‌ , I believe for AP Biology, Cliff notes is a better choice, except it’s pretty precise where Barron’s is implemented for summaries. I agree on the one for AP U.S. History, because I used Barron’s for AP World History and it was not useful. It gave relavant information, but not enough to do well on tests. I used that and my study guide and got a 87 the first test. :frowning: Well thanks again @Camilouisee‌

@APthreepointnine lol I don’t know much about IB programs, since my school doesn’t have one, but I’m guessing it’s kind of like calculus? It seems like a good course, though.

I think IB Math is basically AB/BC Calculus, but Math studies is much easier.
