Due to my school’s block schedule and elective course requirements that are needed to graduate at my high school, I doubt I will have the space to fit four science classes by the end of high school. Are three years “good enough” for selective colleges that have less than a 20% acceptance rate. Note, I have no plans on pursuing the STEM areas. Thank you.
It should be fine if you are not STEM. just show passion in ur field
Hopefully, the 3 you do have are bio, chem, and physics. In which case, you’re fine.
It depends on the college. Look up their requirement. In general, they want to see the 4 cores in all 4 years. You may consider taking a summer class in CC or online.
What a shame.
Emory, Notre Dame, and CMU are such great schools and they missed your 20% acceptance rate cutoff.
But hey, at least you have Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing. Their acceptance rate is a formidable 11%.
That is the minimum. Despite being nonstem, another year of science would be preferable. There are many nonstem kids that take 4 years of science. But if your hs doesn’t allow for this, your GC should make mention of the limitations your school poses.
My son got into some very good colleges with only three years (and no Physics). I don’t think the absence of a fourth year of Science played any role whatsoever in the rejections he received from UC Berkeley, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Claremont-McKenna; they would have been huge reaches for him regardless.
Three years of science: Admitted into Northwestern and Northeastern
@CaliCash A little harsh no? I’m pretty sure he just means that he wants to know about selective colleges.
3 years of science is not the minimum. Many schools only require 2 years of lab science.
@Gatortristan Nope. Not harsh at all.
lol sarcasm was kind of hard to sense over a computer @CaliCash
A lot of schools want 2 or 3, but 4 is recommended. If your major has nothing to do with science then it shouldn’t be a big deal. However, if it is, even to a small extent, you should take 4.
Is AP Environmental Science considered a lab science class? I know it’s preferable to take Physics but my daughter is adamant about not taking it.
Just take AP Environment if she is doesn’t want to take physics. At my school Ap Env has labs, but Idk if I would consider it a lab science. Do not take an AP science (like physics) unless you are interested in it (other than Env cause its super easy).
Lab science means Physics, Chemistry, and Biology even if there is no lab session for the class. I am not sure if Environmental Science is counted but Earth Science may.
