Are UVA Fraternities diverse or are they filled with wealthy white people?

I am somewhat interested in UVA but I heard that UVA as a whole is very self-segregating and that there is little diversity in the fraternity system.

I am African American and according to UVA's profile, 25% of the school is of minority status.

Are the fraternities as diverse as the university?

Like if I joined a fraternity would I be out of place?

I’d avoid fraternities if I where you. Who wants to join an organization that prides itself on getting wasted every weekend?

Join something better like a cappella, or drama, or an intramural sport.

I respectfully disagree with the above post. There’s an old post about Greek life at UVA you may want to look up. UVA is not as diverse as it could be, no doubt, but I don’t think it’s as homogenous as people make it out to be. And Greek life has a lot of benefits, including a support system while you’re in school and a network once you’re out.

There are African American students in traditional Greek orgs. Some are more homogenous than others, but this probably the case in many schools.

There are also 9 traditionally black Greek orgs.

Greek orgs are about more than parties. Some of the big philanthropic events here are sponsored by Greek orgs.

My old fraternity had an African-American elected as President of the local chapter a couple years ago.

I guess you will find that a few fraternities are still full of arrogant spoiled racists, while most others are extremely open and tolerant. Don’t let anyone try to convince you they are all the same - some are rednecks, some are partiers, some are half Jewish, etc. It would help to try to learn a little bit about the houses in advance so you don’t waste your time walking into the ones that you would have no interest in.
