Congrats to your kids @ScreenName48105, @dbandmom, and @JazzKeyMom on having everything in hand!
My D heard from NEC and Oberlin this afternoon. She’s a happy girl. Oberlin has offered her a full ride.
Truly a joyous day.
Thanks so much for the support!
Congratulations to everyone on their wonderful results. Now for the hard part - having to say no to all but one of these fabulous choices!
Huge congrats to all for the admissions results to date! These are some great schools. @ScreenName48105, I don’t know if it will make you or your son feel any better, but I think there was only one undergrad sax spot opening up in the Juilliard jazz program this year. I’m sure you know how tiny the program is, and the numbers game there is ridiculous. Your son did incredibly well to make it through the pre-screen and callback stages, and his results at all the other schools he applied to bear that out.
@jazzpianodad, yeah, I think he had an idea that was the case or pretty darn close. (He met one of the grad students last spring that he’s sort of kept in touch with.) The numbers were daunting all around; just about every school was talking in terms of 1-4 saxophone spots and the difference is just in their expected yield, so another school might accept 5 for their 3 available spots. Juilliard’s announcement blind-sighted him as he wasn’t expecting word until next week. All that work and build-up and then, suddenly, it was just over. His close circle of friends are all applying to various tippy-toppy schools, so they all have a disappointment or two and are rallying around each other, helping each other get excited about the great choices they do have. Nice to see, and also helps keep everything in perspective.
Congrats @ScreenName48105 and DS! Those are wonderful choices, to be sure. I agree that those numbers are daunting (they are similar on the classical sax side and they have me biting my nails - my son is a junior). I’m so glad to hear your son has a good group of friends for support!
Am I the only one who feels like time has actually stopped?
Haha DD, I love that! Time has stopped, either that or ancient Chinese water torture, waiting for that next drop of information
Yeah, I agree. Seems like “beginning of April” is the answer for everything we’re waiting for.
The music kids in my d’s circle of friends are all lamenting that their musical production is this weekend and a few of them expecting to hear from schools on April 1st/Opening Night. This could be a bad thing! It’s also April Fools Day, of course.
Yes @clarinet13mom. My D is opening Friday night in her school’s spring opera, Offenbach’s "Orpheus in The underworld"It’s rotten timing for all the vocal and instrumental kids still awaiting results.
Just hope they can enjoy it all and take it all in…it’s such a special time in their senior year. My d’s school is doing “The Wizard of Oz” and I know we parents will all be crying when Dorothy says, “There’s no place like home”.
We are lucky that she got her results and knows her choice so she can use all her energy thinking good thoughts for her friends.
Now that my S has made his decision On a school for MM, I thought he was finally going to relax a bit. This morning he told me that nothing has changed. He still has a competition this weekend, prepare for the senior juries and recital by adding few new pieces, rehearse to perform a very extensive repertoire at a final concert with his quartet, and look for a place to live in a new city for next year, all before his graduation in May. He will be attending two music festivals for 10 1/2 weeks this summer then head directly to a new school in a new city. I am breathless just thinking about all the things ahead of him but he seems to be happy and thriving at the opportunities given to him. I guess to him this is FUN.
Absolutely having fun now…D made her final decision to take the scholarship and head to Memphis! Her school choir got to perform at Carnegie Hall on Monday and she heads to China tomorrow for her Spring Break class trip! She has a potential roommate she was able to connect with on Memphis’ portal and planning new student orientation for July. (weird that its a separate trip and not a few days before school starts for the year, but oh well…) She’s shopping for prom dresses and I’m planning a graduation party, she deserves it!!!
T minus 9 days and, yup, still stewing…
my D is doing the same @ScreenName48105. headed back to take more lessons. it’s tough!
Wow so we’re not the only ones … I never thought it would come down to the wire like this!
Misery loves company, so thanks guys. Been avoiding the board because I think I may be depressed! I’m starting to think she’s going to choose…nowhere! Ugh! This is tough.
@dbandmom it can be very angst filled & depressing. sigh!!!
have you guys narrowed it down?
@coloraturakid Is she actually traveling back to schools for lessons or is she doing Skype lessons? We can’t travel anymore and I just feel so out of time. I told her to try to get a few Skype lessons if she thinks it would help her decide, but she hasn’t . I honestly didn’t know how realistic that was anyway.
After posting, I saw your other post from earlier this morning, so I know your answer! I’m leaving my post in case someone else can answer about how realistic Skype lessons might be! Safe travels!
