Are you applying next year to UCs?

Hi everyone,

I started college late because I decided to work after high school, and school wasn't a high priority for me at the time. Now that I'm older, I realized that without a degree, it's harder to get by...

I'm currently waiting on schools (5 different UCs) and I just wanted to give the future UC applicants advice on what they can do now to make the most out of their CC life!

First, you should get involved with your community! Join clubs and find out what programs you may be eligible for on campus! For me, I'm an EOPS student and EOPS provides book vouchers, school supplies, bus tickets, counseling, and so much more! It's so difficult getting appointment at the counseling department, but through the EOPS program, we have a personal counselor. Also, if you can't find a club that's to your interest, you can always start a new club! It will be tough but you will learn and grow and understand what it takes to be a leader.

Second, get to KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS. You never know when you'll need them for a lttr of rec and most of the time, they're lonely people just like us! Some, truly enjoy helping students during office hours. Additionally, some teachers grade subjectively and if you're truly struggling in their course BUT show that you're making the effort by showing up to their office hour MAY help with your final grade.

Third, find volunteer opportunities outside of school. I would find an organization that you're interested (perhaps major related) and become involved prior to applying so that you can share your experiences with admission when you apply. It's also a great opportunity to help YOU grow as a person and realize that there are less fortunate individuals in this world.

Last, don't be shy! If you don't get involved now and socialize, it will be that much harder when you transfer! Make the most of your time at CC! It's really not so bad after all! :)

I forgot one other thing Utilize ASSIST.ORG and check your CC homepage to schedule an appointment with UC REPS! The earlier you meet them, the better it is. Some will even offer programs like TAP and will add you to their email list.

1 Make sure to get the two required English courses and the one math course done the Fall semester before you transfer (basically during the semester you apply)! I’ve read about so many people getting rejected by UCs (I’m looking at you UCSB) because they didn’t finish that on time. Really, try to complete your most basic requirements first!

@anavera

To be fair, it’s only UCSB that’s been confirmed to do that, and even then, they don’t reject everyone who hasn’t completed their math/English requirement by Fall. I completed my last math class in the winter session after fall and got admitted to that school.

Still, it’s a good idea to complete those requirements as soon as possible because there’s always the chance that one can screw everything up in what’s supposed to be their last semester and get their offer of admission rescinded or something.

Also, it’s just a good idea to get rid of the not-so-fun requirements ASAP. :P

@Cayton Oh. But yeah, better to finish it first.
