Are you guys hesitant when/if taking a class with a Professor who has never taught?

i mean if it is the Professor's first-year teaching.

i'm trying to decide between Neu and Frenkel for Math 53 next year. Frenkel's class time works out a lot better for me, but i'm apprehensive taking his class because he's brand new and might be really hard or bad.

i do know a lot of people think Neu is really good though.

what do you guys think?

First off, Frenkel is not new. I had him in Fall '05 and he was really good. Definitely one of the top professors I’ve had through 8 semesters here. Few instructors manage to explain concepts as clearly as he does.

I don’t know what his grading distribution was, as Pick-A-Prof data only goes back to '06, but I’m fairly sure it was generous. I don’t remember my exact scores, but something like 85/100 combined on the first two exams (40%) and 65/90 on the final (30%) was enough for an A. Frenkel tells you the approximate score->letter grade conversion for each exam, so you know where you’re at. I felt the exam questions were generally very fair: if you do your homework, you should be fine.

Neu’s stats are on Pick-A-Prof and his distribution (37% A’s, B mean) seems favourable, too. Either way, you can’t lose.

very informative, thanks a lot Student.

New professors are either VERY hard or VERY easy.

Generally, I tend to think the new professors are going to try to do a good job of running their classes. Had a good experience with one myself.
