I had Aganagic, she was great

borcherds duh. he’s not as easy as he was in 1a, so you’ll still have to study your butt off. but his exams are definitely more doable (his curve might be harsher though…i ended up with a B+) Nevertheless, I love the guy. Never went to lecture. hahah Champions League <3

Anyone BUT Ratner. Ay ay ay…
If you don’t know who she is, ask a 3rd/4th year who took Math 1B in spring.

I’m planning to take Math 53 and 54 in my sophomore year. Which prof. will better prepare me for those classes (and probably some upper division math classes).

I did Math 1B with Prof Aganagic. Great prof, MT questions similar to H/W problems; she also provides hints on which techniques to use for nearly every question on the MTs. Math 1B is all about practice so if you do enough practice questions, you will do well.

I’m taking Math 53 and 54 now, and honestly, I don’t think I’m at any disadvantage or advantage having taken 1B with Prof Aganagic. 53 requires basic techniques for integration, and after all the practice in 1B, you should be fine. 54 doesn’t seem to have any relevance to 1B material thus far. Bear in mind that I’m still taking 53 and 54 atm, so I can’t speak for the latter halves of the courses. No idea about upper div math as well.

@copperback
Are you taking both classes at the same time?

Yes. I don’t recommend doing so.

how’s the curve in Aganagic’s class?

^ Very nice. Averages for both midterms were in the 25-28 range out of 30.
Like copper said, Aganagic puts hints on the midterms and they were really helpful. Awesome professor.

I can’t take with Aganagic (scheduling conflicts). Since I’m stuck, who’s better? Ratner or Borcherds?

Borcherds. Do it. You might not understand his lectures, but 1b is all about practicing yourself anyways.

awesome. thanks :)
