i'm hindu, but i like to think of my religious faith as a mix of principles..i just believe in what i believe is right. that's what religion is to me anyway, something personal that is unique.

Natural selection and evolution do not disprove a deity's existence. These two theories explain how life has come to be what it is today. I personally do not believe in god, but to say that natural selection and evolution disprove god's existence is completely ludicrous. If you really love science and hope to understand the theory of natural selection and evolution, I would suggest you read Dawkin's "The Blind Watchmaker".

I think nat. sel. and evo fall more in line with deism.

That's true in most regards. The deists believed (believes?) that there is a deity of some sort, but set laws of the universe in place to do the whole "creation" thing. A lazy god, if you will. ;)

Eh, the modern theory of evolution has rendered any supernatural explanations for the origin of species as superfluous (barring hitherto unseen observations of course, and supposing a coherent definition of supernatural :p ).

"Proofs" are derived analytically from internally consistent axiomatic systems, they have nothing to do with synthetic propositions, based as they (SP) are upon evidence.

I can be areligious or anti-religious, depending upon how one defines this pointlessly nebulous term. If the common ostensive is used, I suppose I'm apathetic, but I strongly oppose the chief epistemology of most religions (ie faith -- lacking rigorous standards) so in that regard I might be considered anti-religious.

Politically I am staunchly secularist, ethically I am an existentialist and an egoist, epistemologically I am an empiricist and a skeptic, and ontologically I am monistic, bordering on supervenience physicalism, but unable to answer certain problems with it (the key difference between noumena and phenomena is my chief woe [woe being used figuratively, not intended to relay presuppositional bias] here). (previous tried to explain my sentiments toward modern religion, btw :) )

Has anyone offered up a concise, categorical definition for "religious" yet? Usually this burden falls to the OP, but he seems to have failed to do so, and I don't want to scour the eleven pages of this thread to uncover one.

Word. They don't necessarily disprove an intelligent creator.

and god moodrets will you speak some damn english?? :(

Sorry if my post was a tad incomprehensible, English isn't my first language y'know :p.

Deists posit the existence of a deity (duh! :p ) who doesn't meddle, or even necessarily cares, about (local) human affairs. They view it as a sort of impartial sentient "first cause," and rarely assign it any anthropomorphic qualities.

I was a deist when I was... 10, or maybe 11. Somewhere around there. :)

u serious? when'd you first learn english?

ah, well, i haven't taken any of those religious/social science/philsoophy classes yet and ive only taken the most basic c ourses and stuff so far 1st yr of high school so yeah.=/

And how were you a Deist in 10? You actually comprehended about all those ideologies when you were 10, because I doubt your parents are Deist...not many kids are "raised" to be a Deist unlike christians or atheists.

huh

Don't know if you're knocking deism, but I'm a subscriber to that belief..mainly out of compromise with religious people. >_>

oh yeah and
it was hilarious when my mormon boyfriend tried to convert me to his religion

lol, you sure you're his only squeeze?

well he sure thought so

but i eventually dumped him..
so he was mistaken..

u serious? when'd you first learn english?
At an early age... 2 >.> :) But it was not my first! :p haha

*

Heh, do you go to a public or to a private school? Most public schools don't offer any such classes (and my experience with them in private school leads me to the conclusion that HS phil. teachers are genearlly incompetent :/). Most of what I've learned I've learned through reading or through participation in forums and discussions on the internets.

And how were you a Deist in 10?
That was when I rejected certain other notions and still thought that the cosmological argument was sound, lol. :/

* You actually comprehended about all those ideologies when you were 10, *
eh, I guess so. The internet helped alleviate any misunderstandings that I might have had, although I've always been rather introverted and self-reflective.

because I doubt your parents are Deist
Really? Why is that?
*
...not many kids are "raised" to be a Deist unlike christians or atheists.*

Christianity is rather prevalent here in the states, isn't it. Atheism not so much, although given that it is the default position (non-belief in lou of justification) I don't quite see how atheism can be raised (as it is the absence of an opinion) past the whole "not bothering to raise the kids in a particular theistic memeplex"

I'm atheist..

Um, why is it a surprise that people on CC didn't have English as their first language? I came to America when i was 8. Learning it when you're 2 hardly counts for "English as a second language". You don't even say much the first two years of your life.

I know, but it's still a nifty excuse to use, and I most definitely did not explicitly deceive anyone (if they dream up some long, complicated history, how is that my fault? :p )

Oh, and I didn't come over here when I was 2, but rather I began learning English when I was 2, if that counts for anything.

I was fairly proficient in it by the time I actually arrived, though.

Edit: Wait, did I say it counted for much? It was not the first language I learned. Chronologically it was the second. What does my age upon learning it matter?

^future of CC right here....don't hate

Lol, I'm probably only here for the summer, and maybe for help whenever I get around to registering for college.

Not long left...

where you going for college?
